Well I got off to a bad start when two attempts to do an upgrade install from 64 bit Home Premium Vista to 64 bit Home premium Win 7 failed and rolled back. I then did the clean install I had been hoping to avoid with no problems and am gradually puting things back.
So far I am reasonably impressed and would agree with the view that it's "Vista done properly".
I suppose the advantage of a clean start is I get rid of all the rubbish accumulated over the last 2 years that I never actually used.

I think the "trick" upgrading method from the BETA to the RTM only applies to the Ultimate version..
- may be the same with Vista Ultimate.. Thinking

@Bugmeister: glad your copy turned up at last. Thumb up

Couple of issues I've encountered: the autoupdate of NIC driver fubared the pc's ability to connect to the internet. Fortunately I could find the correct driver using my laptop and transfer it manually Rolling Eyes.
Second thing was some games wouldn't launch (e.g. MTW2, Bioshock) - so a bit of googling later and I installed lots of directx updates. Didn't expect to have to do that but there you go.

And, just for laughs, I've ditched AVG9 to give MSE a whirl.

- with 6G RAM onboard, whacked up the twin4890s' settings to MAX @1600x900 on these titles under Windows7:

Crysis Warhead: it goes beautifully - Psycho's a really neat CHR..
- driving the tanks and heavy trucks is great fun..
I installed this one on SSD for speedy loading/saving, etc - goes like crazy!!

- the GFX in Oblivion are pretty smart-looking at times, depending on lighting..
- the scene-loading times are greatly reduced by the extra RAM ..

Flashpoint DR is excellent - especially the night scenes - brilliant directional audio in surround-sound..

FarCry 2 just floats along - totally smooth - the vehicles are impressive
- I like the way your eyes take a second to adjust from the brightly-lit outdoors to the darker interior scenes..

X3:TC - amazing, brilliant - usual stuff.. Very Happy Thumb up
- and there's no juddering at all - everything is tickety-boo..!!
- the i7-965's do wonders here, saves are so quick and sector-gates/jumps, etc are all smooth..
- I had already converted the soundfiles to wma, so the thing works perfectly..

- testing continues..
Fallout 3 just didn't feel right under the BETA
- gameplay was smooth enough, but..
- with widescreen settings, it adopted a box-like window for the player
- with the main CHR just a bit too far forward to feel "natural"..

Is that a good idea for me to do aswell, why ya do it? Razz

I am installing X3:TC now.

My only win 7 casualty appears to be my dvb-t usb tuner Asus My Cinema U3000 its calling itself an SKT7700 in devices and not finiding a driver even though I downloaded vista 64 bit driver.

There was an issue with the sound in the RC version of W7 which seems to have been fixed now so there should be no need to convert the mp3s to wmas.

- hey, that's good to know, berth.. Smile
- I'll leave my current installaion of TC as it is though..
- don't want to disturb my current Humble Trader start..

- went mad and bought a few titles today:

Sins Of A Solar Empire - well it's been looking at me from the shelves for so long - and, no, I'm NOT thinking of defecting..!! Surprised
Batman Arkham Asylum - 'cos of the trailers, really.. Rolling Eyes
World Of Goo - 'cos it looks mental.. Twisted Evil
Mass Effect - to see why everybody hates it so much..!! Razz
Dragon Age Origins - 'cos of the Bioware/Baldur's Gate comments I read earlier.. Cool

- I'm off to test these out.. Very Happy Thumb up
- oh, and Fallout 3 as well..!!

Right, finally got the copy for my laptop today [a fortnight after ordering it, despite paying a stupid £15 delivery charge . . . thanks for nought, UPS & Dell], and have been playing around with it.

Looks great, is far more customisable, and is much more user-friendly! It also seems to be running a lot faster than Vista was a few hours ago.

Well done, Microsoft!
