X3 TC Video Competition -- Cancelled
UPDATE: Due to lack of interesting participation in the video competition, the competition has been cancelled. If you want, though, you may still submit videos to be viewed and shared with others, but they will not take part of the competition.
Hello fellow space traders (or pirates! ). I enjoyed the X3 Terran Conflict Video Competition that Egosoft hosted so much that I decided to host one of my own here. The competition starts now and ends on January 31st 2010.
List of Entries (I will automatically update these for every new entry):
D.U.E.L (Retro Edition) - metalvenom
X3tc Boron patrol - Rumillion
Give Me Power - MarkOmRuki
X3TC-Space Wars - BlueSabor
X3 - Terran Conflict: Movie Trailer - repatomonor (Awaiting re-edit of this film)
All participants must state their username and their video link to enter. Only one video per person will be allowed.
To take the video you can use Fraps to record while in-game.
Dowload link for free version of Fraps:
http://www.fraps.com/download.php
Manual on how to use Fraps:
http://www.fraps.com/faq.php
After recording and editing your video you can post it on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com ) and then submit the link here.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No CUSTOM ships, factories or sectors should be used in the video...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The video should be 100% Terran Conflict. Scripting of course is allowed but no custom ships, factories, etc.
DEMO VIDEO: X3 Terran Conflict: Last Stand Of The Colossus - metalvenom
Quick guide to making your own X3 TC Video.
- Download Fraps or another decent screen recorder.
- If you are not sure how to use Fraps go to the link for the manual I have provided above.
- Start the game, make sure mods involving custom ships, factories are disabled.
- Under Graphics settings choose the settings you know your computer will be able to handle without lag or too low framerates, it will appear nicer on the video if it is of smooth quality.
- Load a new or saved game.
- To start recording press F9 (or another button if you have designated another one on Fraps to start recording)
- Using the script editor is allowed to set things up the way you want for the video.
- Record anything you want -- it can be trading, building factories, dogfights between fighters, or just massive battles.. anything.
- When you are done recording, you can edit it, add a soundtrack or just keep it the same way you recorded it
- Finally when your video is just the way you want it, you will need to put it on YouTube and then submit the link for the video here and I will add the to the competition.
note: After you have edited you video you may still need to compress it before you put it onto YouTube. Try using this program to compress it to mpeg or another format.
VirtualDub --- Another freebie
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To enter your video in the competition simply add the name of your video and the corresponding link
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If there is anything you still don't understand or want to find out, please feel free to ask.
Thank you all for reading and happy video making ...
EDIT: If someone can also please add a full guide on how to make your own X3 TC Video it will be very much appreciated. Otherwise I will work on a making a guide this following week.
Special Thanks:
metalvenom - for providing his outstanding video and advice..

What about projectile appearance mods? Combat Mod 3 does change the visuals on pretty much all weapons, but they're a lot prettier.
Also do you know a decent non-commercial video recorder? Fraps is commercial, Wegame doesn't support TC and XFire encodes the video in some weirdass codec that won't work with any of my video editors.

Combat mod 3 should be fine.. i just don't want custom ships, factories or planets.. so anything in the video should recognizable from the game itself . I will edit my main post to make it more clearer.
As for another screen recorder I do not know of any non-commercial ones myself. You could try downloading the free trial for Camtasia but i think that is a commercial one as well.

Good to hear. I'll keep it to external views (got a cockpit mod, visual change is impossible to ignore). Googled around and found a couple links to some freeware recorders. I've not tried them yet but I'll give them a go now.

Camstudio seems decent, as long as you have a few different codecs to choose from. I couldn't get it to record from the speaker output and a lot of codecs I tried didn't work with the program, making it refuse to record. The final video was quite small in size albeit with mediocre quality, but I had the quality slider quite low. It seems made with general screen recording in mind rather than games, but there's support for record/stop hotkeys and it seems fine for most things. You can also define an area on the screen to record from, so if you're playing windowed you can adjust the recording region so that you'll only record the game video.

Try using the free version of Fraps by going to the link I suggested at the top . It is specifically for use with games and it is simple to use and is good quality as well... |
or simply buy it as I did...

By "custom ships" does that also refer to the custom cockpit mods that are in this forum?
I am currently using PCO1's CockpitMod.

Yep. So you can still make a movie but without the custom cockpits. AFAIK you can switch this off easily by pressing Shift+H in-game, this will switch off your HUD completely including the cockpit.
Or like others you can just go to external view.
