(Another) Windows 7 Graphics issue

[Iamo]

My problem is that when resolution is set on anything lower than max screen res (1400x900x32) then the game is shrunk. Ie, the resolution within the play area remains the same whatever i set the resolution to but as resolution goes down this means that the game area must be made smaller. This means that at lower res, i have a black boundary. This is a problem because i don't think my machine is powerful enough to run at max res :(

X3:TC 2.5, Steam version (probably english?), Vanilla.

Have you tried setting the screen resolution outside of the game first? Does it even have an option to do that? Laptops generally don't like running in non-native mode resolutions, which is 1440x900 for yours. It's most likely that the laptop graphics drivers aren't letting you change it to some odd resolution, and simply uses the selected number of pixels as the displayed game window while making all the 'unused' pixels black, hence the black 'border'.
