|

Hello all.
A player asked me over pm today if I still had the old X3 guides from the old Respawn site. The answer is yes I do. I also have some X2 guides as well which I have packed up with the X3 guides for anybody that wants them.
Here is a link.
http://www.theengineeringguild.co.uk/files/x/xguides.zip
Just be warned that whilst my spelling and gramma is vastly improved today because of all the practice I got writing guides like these (that was actually my reason for writing so many guides btw), back then I was far from perfect so whilst these guides may need a little spell checking
So if anybody wants to host them or spell check them or both, go a head.
I have no Terran Conflict guides, so do not expect to find any TC specific guides here. I never purchased the game.
I suffer from X3 burn out after heavily testing X3 but I also like cockpits and nebulas that hide stations, planets and asteriods in a realistic way. Something X3 never did provide and even though I have hundreds of hours in game, I never actually got over the lack of those features.
Hense the reason I skipped TC.
But I do look forward to seeing everybody in some future X game with cockpits and realistic nebulas included as standard (hopefully)
Quick Hi to all my old friends here, hope your still around and all is well.
You can reach me over pm, i always keep the details here up to date for that reason. So even when I am away, you can still contact me.
Enjoy.

Thanks Giskard, I am sure that your efforts are appreciated by the community... There are still alot of X3:R die hards out there ... I miss flying around in my X2 Raptor, but am finding the latter X3 games a little too compelling.
On the subject of realistic nebulaes, I guess you are talking about the kind that can reduce the range of the Gravidar?

The Nebula effect gives a transparent view of objects in the distance allowing you to see planets through them. When the planet it self should have also been obscured by the nebula.
Its a problem X3 had that they said I would get used too and I tried but I never liked it and never got used to it. It was a game killer for me in the end.
Stalker Clear skies has the same issue only it places a clear horizon behind the transparent trees so whilst you can see they are transparent, the side effects are not as pronounced.
To be honest, it smells like something introduced in Directx to me, but i could be wrong.
Anyway I played X3 far too much already and I am more of a X trader rather than combat pilot anyway. So its Trade not combat that attracts me to the series.
You will find the guides especially good if your a trader but the combat ones are also pretty cool, still i found its a question of personal taste really.

I'm a trader too. Into TC,except for the fact my rig is not good enough to do all the things I'd like to do.
Reunion and X2 is fine. Cut my teeth on X2.So thanks.Downloading as I type.
I am just tinkering with the OS tweaks and changing hardware and stuff to make the rig last, but in the end I need a serious machine to cope with TC requirements.
Let's face it guys, even the recommended system as per the box,is really only mid range these days. And my rig is somewhere below that.
I would not even attempt to play it on a minimum spec rig.
Looking at getting a 1GB AGP card and DDR2 main memory upgrade to 4GB 800.Those two items should buy me time to save for something a bit classy.
i7 perhaps?

It's good when you find some things from X2. It gives people a reason to come back to a time when combat was much harder.

The thing I miss most in TC is the sense of achievement when you have worked so darned hard for it...like getting your first M2 from from Argon.
I guess they made TC "easier" to appeal to a new market.
There is nothing to stop us re-playing Reunion or The Threat,or earlier versions if you have them.
And I doubt if Giskard is the only player who has not played TC or has no inclination to yet.
What I do like about TC is there are so many more options and and new ships and stations etc.,etc.,plus there is not just a single plot (or story-line).
It will be interesting to see how hardware-demanding the next Egosoft game will be.

To me, your guides were about: Know what toys there are in the sandbox, and THINK all the possible ways you can play with them. Wonderful thoughts.
I have not touched X3TC yet, but I have enjoyed every cry I have seen on the forum after every patch it has gotten.

Yes that is exactly it, tell them how things work, throw some ideas out there and let the imagination do the rest. To me its always been about providing the building blocks and letting the player build what he or she wanted.
X has some much potential in that area, one of the reasons ive always liked the series. Its also pretty sad when it fails to achieve that potential.
To TTD:
On the topic of TC being easy, to be truthful here, i played the X games more than most and was never able to get half the stuff most people got. I have long had the opinion that the advanced stuff in the X series could only be gotten by cheating.
So if TC makes it slightly easier, I think that is a good thing.
I rarely ever played more than 1 real game on most X games, it took so long to get anything that i simply did not have the time to play it different ways. I think that was especially a problem with x3 to be honest.
Also a 1 Gig PCIE graphics card with 4 gig of ram on a 64 bit OS will run most games in max res very well. At least thats what I found.

You'd do well to keep that particular opinion to yourself. Just because you didn't have the skill, persistence, or patience to "get half the stuff most people got", doesn't mean those players had to cheat to get it. That's a bit insulting to all those players who put long hours into the game and managed to get what you failed to. That hardly means they 'cheated', whatever your definition is.
In fact, even in the earlier games, all the way back to X-BTF, once one got past a certain point financially, it was easy to get more and more. The acquisition of wealth tends to snowball after a while. It's why I, and many others, started playing 'restricted' games, i.e., games that put self-imposed limits on what we could do. And I'm still doing it in TC.
