Is there a reason why I'm getting such bad performance? If I'm in a busy sector my frames dip into the teens, even with my system. I've been monitoring my GPU and my CPU usage. My GPU is practically idling while I play and the highest I ever see any of my cores is around 50% usage. I would believe that this is a GPU issue because I only get bad performance while actually looking towards the busy sector, just being in a busy sector itself doesn't seem to have an effect on my performance. I don't quite understand what is going on. Is this game not utilizing my GPU?

My system eats and spits out Crysis on max in DX10. Can it handle a complex in TC bigger than three stations without it slowing to a crawl like I haven't seen since I played HL2 on a Radeon 9550? No. Most definitely not.

I'm starting to think it completely ignores my 4870X2 and uses my Core i7 for absolutely everything. (And still it should perform better than it does.)

So - no - what you're experiencing isn't strange at all. Something broke between R and TC.

This game must be poorly optimized, or just can't handle new systems for some reason then. I have no problem completely maxing any other game (save Crysis) but I get crap frame rates in this one when it gets slightly busy.

A few things:

Did you disable your onboard audio? It looks like you have 2 audio cards enabled but I could be wrong.

Check to see if SLI is enabled for the game. With older vid drivers X3TC wasn't an available game profile. I like to watch my card temps and fan speeds to see if a game is putting out properly.

Actually I have noticed a difference in performance also. I could handle R quite easily, with cockpits which is a huge FPS drain. Yet soon as I run TC the thing stutters all over the place. Now the graphics do not look much different to R, and I have it set to exactly the same settings. No AA and such, high textures, high other things. Yet it still stutters.

It's very very odd, and I agree with 4d, something does seem to have broken quite badly between the two games.

Yea, I am trying to get a codec moved myself.
I tracked down mad Boris post on codecs in the forum its very informative.
I have a WMAudio Decoder DMO probably from windows
in where the WMSpeech Decoder Should be.
Also, when I change the file name(mov) in Terran Conflict the
game won't start -it tries to get "tage codecs" which I can't find listed in the DSF manager.
The Direct show viewer cheat sheet does not have so much of a
MPEG-video and Audio Streams for cutscenes and mission briefings-
it jumps from MP3 to SPEECH entering systems, in stations and target info like booster not installed.
The WMAudio Decoder DMO is jammed in the SPEECH area where the
WMSpeech Decoder DMO should be.
Anyway. the WMAudio Decoder DMO and WMSpeech Decoder DMO
are unknown so I will have to see if filemon or some other list Mad Boris
discussed helps as it doesn't let me change the affinty for using the
decoders as they are unknown listed( trying to route to sys 32 didn't work).
Is there any major issue with not having the MPEG area in the second area on the cheat sheet DShow Viewer. Will it pop bck up if
I get the WMAudio Decoder DMO moved.

The WMAudio Decoder DMO vs WMSpeech Decoder issue is explained several times in MadBoris' thread. MadBoris' tool was developed before WMP 11 came out, which changed the name of the codec. Either is fine and whatever problems you are having, these are not likely to be involved. Regarding "tage codecs", I suspect you may be misreading something. Are you sure it's not referring to TAGES, the copy protection system? All in all, since your problem doesn't appear to have anything to do with the problems other people in this thread are talking about, I suggest you start a new thread and provide the information requested in the very first thread in this forum.

I'll start a new thread then,
However-I will say I used the same tool on X3 reunion.
(fully patched version)
And it works like excellent.
The codecs are all in the proper place and the grouping in the cheat sheet
of Dshow viewer is in place.
Not so in Terran Conflict.
txs
and the game files are almost the same (a little more data in TC though-)

My onboard audio should not be interferring with my Asus Xonar DX. My GTX 280 only hits about 55C which is why I know it's nearly idling, and my CPU appears to be hardly used. I'm not looking at overall CPU usage, I'm looking at the invididual cores, most of the time the highest usage is around 25%-30% with it reaching 50% occasionally. I don't understand, it doesn't appear that X3:TC is utilizing all available resources. In any case, I'll see if update 2.1 fixes any of these issues I have before requesting further assistance.

xenopanda,
I read on another thread that TC is not really a multi core game utilizer
check a bit in forum. I didn't look over your dx diag just make sure
u have functional pretty up to date drivers (not always the newest-as not always the most functional)
and check at least check ur codec Direct show viewer takes a sec to download. And a sec to view- and slow stutering performance can be caused by audio/speech codecs.
(just a thought-you may have already done-cya gotta try out new patch).

With a decent graphics card, this game is very much CPU-bound rather than GPU bound in most situations. If CPU utilisation is low (bearing in mind that the game is single-threaded so can only use one core itself, though drivers and other Windows processes may run on other cores) then that implies that something other than a CPU bottleneck is causing your performance issues. One possibility, I suppose, is disk access. Did you do a full install or one which left some files to be read from the DVD?

I did a full install, including the "large video files" but exluding the other languages. I don't think that would have an effect. My RAM usage appears to be around 80-90% at times but I wouldn't think this game would require more than 4GBs of RAM to operate smoothly. In any case, I'm going to do a clean install on a different hard drive, install the update and check how the performance seems. I do appreciate your assistance however.

I just finished up installing everything. I loaded up one of my saves and the performance seems to be a lot better. Now I'm getting 40-50fps in Elena's Fortune instead of whatever I was getting before, probably around 20.

How fragmented was your original install? TC accesses the disc constantly, both to load new model data AND to stream video to advertising screens. If there was a lot of fragmentation (in particular, if your defragmenter had moved large files to a space-hog area) then that might have caused a bottleneck.

I always run defragment before I uninstall a large program and after I install one. My disk was not fragmented. I also reinstalled the game, and defragmented my HDD before to see if that would make a difference and it did not. I doubt the HDD would be such a performance killing bottleneck anyway, it was a WD Raptor.

In any case, 2.1 seemed to alleviate a large portion of the problem.
