Factory node counts

Ok, after throwing together some hacky Perl scripts and making extensive use of Doubleshadow's excellent X3 Editor, I think I finally have a comprehensive list of the complex node counts on each of the factory types.

There's no guarantee that these numbers are accurate, but to the best of my ability I believe they are. Nevertheless, if anyone sees an error, please let me know and I'll investigate it.

The one surprising thing that came out of this is the 4-node Teladi Sun oil refinery M. I double-checked the script and it appears to be doing the right thing, but can anyone verify that off the top of their heads? If it's true, that's going to be a pretty nice, cheap way to expand the node count in a big complex (say, one that produces a large number of PACs, HEPTs or PPCs).

For the curious, I am analyzing the XXX_scene.bod files for the number of "dummy_connection" entries. I don't know for certain that this is the correct way to determine the node counts, but it seems to corellate.

BTW, I verified that the Sun oil refinery M does in fact have 4 nodes. So if you've got the spare cash and need more nodes, you can sprinkle a few of these around the complex, and add a net 2 nodes each. Not a bad deal for about 1M...

crystal fabs M have more than 2 nodes. its three I think maybe 4 but definantly more than 2. There is at least 1 on one end ( then end I connect it to a spp ) and at least 2 on the back end.

Are you certain that all the nodes work, Incubi? I just looked in the game and although you are correct that there are 4 visible nodes (3 on one end, 1 on the other), I looked at a half-dozen complexes, most of them of reasonable size, and not a single one had a crystal fab with more than 2 connections to it.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but what I'm guessing is that you may see 4 nodes but only 2 are "hooked up". Of course, if you have evidence to the contrary I'd love to hear it...

True, but they will not produce. If you add a Flower farm, you are back to net 1 for the pair, unless you add 2 * Flower L + 5 * Refinery M.

Btw, you can condense the list even further:
[HEPT|PAC|PPC|IRE|PSG|PBE]s, instead of alpha, beta and gamma separately.
Shields, instead of 1MJ, 5MJ, ... 10GJ

However, some people need things spelled out. :(

That's fine by me. In fact, it's better since unless I have a particular use for them (input to a different fab), I'd rather they just sit there and not consume energy.

Of course, ideally there would be a kind of "hub" fab that did nothing but sit there and increase your number of nodes. But this is the next best thing, I think.

Do you mean that you see 4 shapes similar to nodes? The 3D model may very well have such 'textures' around, but the game probably looks at the same data file entries as Scott.

I agree with the nonproductive use. However, I can imagine half of the universe map blinking yellow. :roll:

Ha, half my map already blinks yellow. Usually due to my own laziness in waiting for primary products to fill up before connecting final product fabs. I suppose I could fill them up manually, but like I said... lazy :-).

The Crystal fabs do only have two nodes, but which of the three modelled nodes does it use ?

small complex

This is my old SPPXL complex from ages ago, and all of the bottom left fabs are Crystal Fabs.

When I was building some extra factories into this complex I noticed that the tube network would not link from the crystal Fabs.

In this picture, my all conquering GPPC/Gj shield complex shows that the tubing network will not link to more than two nodes on the crystal fabs.

Well that explaims the mystery. I was wondering why it only used 2 of the three modelled nodes :( I guess the two nodes in the back are to close to eachother to use both :( thanks for clearing that up. I kept thinking it was just a game oddity that caused it to link some things to further away nodes. How cruel to model nodes that not functional lol.

This looks like a good reason to use 2 L spp in stead of 1 xl or even 3 m spp instead of 1 L. I allready decided to use 3 L spp in Brennans triumph instead of an xl and a m anyway, now I have another reason too :D
I noticed that not connecting a silicon mine to a complex works out just fine if its set to 0 zero jumps and buy and sell for same price as main complex. How well does this work if I expand on the concept and make multiple mini complexes rather than 1 large one, useing cheap mercuries as go betweens? Such as the spp plant with the fabs and the food that just it needs, then another complex for the commercial goods, another complex ( or multiple ) for end user weapons and shields, and finaly another for the food needs. I havent tried that yet, have not decided if it would just end up as messy as one large one.

Its a shame the flower farms are 1 node, this may as well drop the sun oil refinery to a 3 node in practicle use. Oh well.

It's a shot taken from my fleet (1 titan, 1Raptor + 39M3 sentinal +24 M4 Split ships + 1 Python)

They are currenntly idling in the first Khaak sector after my python wiped the floor with every ship in the sector.

The complex is in Rhonkars clouds, accessed through the sector map.

Its a real action shot of a Khaak M5 (straggler) being sent to meet his freinds by a beta flak artillery array.... :)

Depends. As I said earlier 2L+5M is still some. Two Flower L are effectively -2. Five Refinery Ms are +10. That is still +8 net gain. Compare that to 10 units of food made by Cattle+Cahoona combinations. They give +0 additional free nodes. How do people do Argon complexes anyway?

Brilliant topic, wish this had been here a few days ago while I was making my first big complex, took me about 4 hours to get the 7 weapon facilities properly connected :'( (5 AHEPTS and 2 APACS). I had never thought that they would only have one node and now the whole thing is a big mess lol.

Oh well, better luck next time, great job on the list! :)

with wheat farms and spacefuel. And a strong security to prevent the guys loading ships with aheps from doing so intoxicated ;)
