Starts Not Unlocking - Used registry workaround.

Post by JamesB33 » Fri, 15. Jun 12, 10:58

Hello,

I wanted to play as a Split or Boron so I started a game with one of the initially available starts and fought my way up to Specialist. The Split start did not unlock. I then got my Split rep up to Privilidged Associate of Rhonkar and the Boron start did not unlock. It is my understanding that both should have unlocked. My fighter rank is now Fighter Chief and still nothing. What's going on? I can't play the game with those starts despite having earned them. It's getting me down. Help me please.

Thanks

Which Boron and Split starts are you referring to and which game (X3AP or X3TC) are you playing?
I then got my Split rep up to Privilidged Associate of Rhonkar and the Boron start did not unlock.

It would surprise me, if increasing your Split rank would unlock any Boron start.

Thanks for the quick reply and sorry about the lack of detail in the initial post. I'm playing Terran Conflict and using this as a guide: http://www.x3wiki.com/index.php/Starts

Forget about the Boron bit, I was mistaken. The two starts I am referring to are the Savage Split start and the Unholy Traitor start. According to the wiki page I should also have unlocked the Pious Paranid start.

Check that you meet all the requirements for the starts from this guide. You look as though you should have met them to me.

Do you have any sort of Registry monitor or protection application that might be preventing changes to Registry keys? If you did not give permission for the Registry changes with such programs running then the starts will not unlock as the relevant key will not be altered.

Thank you for your response. I have had a look as the link you provided, it specifies that in order to unlock Savage Split and Pious Paranid the combat rank of specialist must be reached, and to unlock Unholy Traitor the rank of specialist must be reached and Split rep must be of a certain level. As I mentioned in the OP, I have reached and surpassed Specialist and am now at Fighter Chief, and my Split rep is of the required level. Perhaps I am missing something else?

I'm concerned because NONE of the starts have unlocked, even though I appear to have satisfied three of them. I think this suggests that the game is not communicating correctly with my registry.

Yes I just did an edit above, does that apply?

Not that I'm aware of, however I suppose it is possible that my antivirus could frown upon registry edits. Would it be possible to check the registry to see what's going on?

I would instead read your AV instruction manual to see what it says about registry protection.

To be honest, if the additional starts are important to the way you want to play and the method by which you unlock them is not, then just do the registry key edit described here.

I just checked myself. The value I have in the registry for gamestarts is 4c00. Not sure if that means anything to anyone.

Yes, that should mean whatever starts you have unlocked now!

Yeah that looks like what I'll have to do. Even though I earnt some of the gamestarts, it still feels a bit dodgy. I don't suppose anyone knows the values for certain gamestarts being unlocked rather than it being an all or nothing deal?

I forgot to mention that the Anonymous Argon start was unlocked, I must have unlocked it when I last played the game sometime last year. I guess that it why the value is not default.

Experiment 4c00 to ffff remembering that each bit of that binary code is a different possible start flag. You can brush up your binary/hex code while trying setting different bits! You can always go back to the original code as a fall-back.

IMPORTANT: make sure you are editing nothing but that EGOSOFT start key!!!

I'll have a play around and see what I can do. I also found this thread just before where the person had the same kind of problem; http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=321845 . In the end it appeared to resolve itself, but there must have been some kind of trigger.

I changed it to 4c05 and I was granted the 7 default starts and the exact 4 starts that I had unlocked. That was easy/lucky. Thanks for all your help :)

Technically, it's actually the start conditions you've met rather than the starts you've unlocked (the info is buried in the starts thread, but here's a summary).

0x4c00 looks like it glitched out on fight rank for some reason.

EDIT: Or not. Both those guides are actually wrong. Fight rank 3333 (which is the actual unlock condition) is some ways into Fighter Chief, not Specialist.

Thanks Carlo. I'm always learning something new in this game! It is quite interesting that those Stickied guide errors have survived this long!

@ Heldane: Thanks but not only was that an 8 year old thread necro but you posted in the wrong forum for X3:R too.
