Ok.. I have found out what CFF Explorer is..

Now.. could someone tell me how i use this to turn off/on the "use more than 2gb" switch for x3tc.exe. I open the .exe in CFF but have no clue where to look :p.

Out of interest.. does anyone know if you could use this to turn ON use more than 2gb memory for games that are not 64 bit aware.. I am thinking of Empire Total War.

DON'T!

To use more than 2gb of ram, a game must have the high memory aware flag set, AND the game must be written in such a way that it won't crash if it attempts to access high memory.

A game with the high memory flag set will run fine if it is given a small amount of ram - after all, it has to cope with machines with just 2gb of ram. It doesn't matter whether the small amount of ram is given because the system only has 2gb ram or because you forced windows to hand over less ram than was available.

But... force a game to take 3gb when its code is expecting to be given only 2gb, and all sorts of weird and wonderful crashes will occur. For instance, if the devs have used the high bits of memory addresses to store other data (expecting those bits to be clear) and these bits are overwritten with real address data, then the game will get very, very confused.

An example is that of a list of pointers to blocks of data, with the end of the list marked by an address which is too large to be a real address. If the game is given 3gb of ram, then addresses in the top gb of ram will be too large, so if the game puts game data in that space and tries to store the address of that data in a list, then it will create a false end-of-list marker. When it comes to process the data linked to by the list it will stop processing data too soon. The results of that would be strange, and probably crash the game, if not the whole system.

I think this answer would also serve to correct my problem if anyone could get around to sharing it.

appreciated.

Hi Guys,
i experienced the slowdown problem as mentioned in the quote->
ragamer wrote:K... There are multiple posts reporting the same issue, but I think this is the one that my observations match better.

Strange Behaviour:

At some point the system halts down to 1-2 FPS, the GUI do not come up and the Sound is cut
By coincidence i tried pressing the 'Esc' key and it seemed to get the game up and running again!!! Menu reappeared and fps back to normal.

[Update]
Had the problem again, but could not reproduce the effect of esc so please disregard!! One thing i noticed this time though, switching out to taskman and back again, i was unable to get screen to redraw ie just had a blank screen! I could hear the game runnning in the background and pressing ctrl would fire guns!! Seems the game was actually running normally again, just no display!

[Update 2]
Have a save that concurrently gives this problem! so experimented with disabling the >2gb aware header!! Solved the problem!

Egosoft i would be willing to send my savegame file, if you would like to troubleshoot further!!
Something is not working as it should re. 2gb aware.
Time to kick in the door at MS and demand an explanation!!

Has anyone who reported problems on this thread has noticed an improvement in 2.1?

I have only done a quick test flight with a new start and a saved game and my initial impressions are : 'the problem still persists, but its an awful lot better if I had to give a figure I would say 70% better with respect to suttering and lag'

Game still runs like absolute crap after the patch. I refuse to even mess with it till there's a patch that fixes it. X3 Reunion ran like butter on my rig and X3: TC shouldn't run any worse.

I can run Crysis in dx10, everything maxed and at 1920 x 1200 with about 30fps, yet X3: TC makes my system chug down to like 15fps or lower regularly.

It's just poorly optimized. Something is causing it to be way more CPU heavy than it should be.

Here's my system specs and dxdiag for what it's worth. Everything is running super cool, and please, save your breath and don't tell me it's because my CPU is slightly overclocked. It ran worse before the OC.

If it were just a case of the game being "poorly optimised" then everyone would be suffering the same problems, and people with slower systems than you would be suffering worse. That clearly isn't the case. I'm also not sure how your statement squares with your previous post in which you said performance was "damn near perfect".

Whether you overclock or not is up to you, but if you are not prepared to even examine that as a possible cause then it's probably not worth anyone trying to help you. However, I will make a few suggestions and leave you to decide whether or not to bother trying them.

- Check for updated sound drivers
- Try reinstalling the game in case there is a fragmentation or other installation issue (I've seen at least one report where this helped a lot)
- If you're running the DVD version then make sure you do a full install, i.e. not leaving any files to be read from the DVD
- You have a long codec list including at least two known problem codecs (ffdshow and Haali) - see the sticky threads in this forum for ways to deal with these, but also remove any other codecs you don't actually need

@Dahzeal33

I "revived" this thread just to know if any of the people who already posted in this thread have seen improvement in the issue described in the OP (and more detailed in some of the post that followed) not to get rants of people with general performance problems that may be or may be not releated with this.

Started reading this thread as Ihave the exact same issue. Looked promising to start with but got lost somewhere in the middle.

Does anyone know of a fix for this on Vista 64 machines

Depends what you mean by "this" - your best bet is to start your own thread for simplicity's sake, and include a dxdiag so people can take a look at it, including the details from the sticky thread (like game version, mods installed, description of the problem etc.)
Math problems? Call 0800-[(10x)(13i)^2]-[sin(xy)/2.362x]

Sorry, I was a little peeved after installing the patch and seeing no change.

I'm going to try the codec stuff you mentioned.

I know the OC isn't an issue because it ran slightly worse before.

When I was having issues in the beginning I searched for new sound drivers and the ones I have are the newest. I'll try that again.

What I meant in my last post about "damn near perfect" was the combat freezes due to the memory bug before 2.0 were gone.
