What graphics card is best for me? How to upgrade for X3?

Personally, I'd take the hit now and go for the 1950. The 1650 is always going to be significantly slower as it is only 128bit, and importantly, it does not have the number of vertex shader pipes that the 1950 enjoys, a feature which is very important for this generation of card and X3.
The 1950 will also allow you to keep the card and play upcoming games an awful lot longer than a 1650 would. A good example of this is that a 1950 will pretyt much play every game out now in decent quality, whereas a 1650 is already struggling in many.

Personally I'd say get a 8800GT. Near GTX performance at a fraction of the cost.
You do not want to be buying any ATI card unless you're REALLY strapped for cash, in that case save your money and wait til you can afford an 8800 GT.

I heard it was going to be slower than 2900 XT.The_Abyss wrote:I'd almost agre, with the proviso that as good as the 8800GT is, the ATI 3xxx is going to be released in a couple of weeks and could be just as good.
But going by what Nvidia achieved by going to 65 nm, it should be interesting to see what ATi come up with on an even smaller process.
Should be a good fight

I'm rather alarmed that ATI have had to resort to heavily publicising it is DX10.1 ready, when DX10.1 won't even be available until Vista SP1 next year. That doesn't bode too well.
Rumour has it that the 8800GTS will be refreshed based on the 65nm architecture before the end of the year, again in 256bit format, meaning onboard memory is either 512mb or 1gb. Depending on the pricing, that could well be a GTX beater.

If you NEED to upgrade now, go with the 8800GT, it looks to be a sweet card.
If you CAN wait, RV670 is around the corner, and ATI are very good at pitching their products well on the price/performance scale.

want the FACTS about X2/X3?

i can wait if theres a chnace ati could bring out a gd set of cards.
Like i said above i prefer them over nvida and from wot ive herad nvida drivers can be complete crap half the time compared to atis which ive never had a problem with.
Plus they dont annoy me with "nvida the way ient to be played" on every goddamn game that dosnt work well with nvida cards untill 20 sets of drivers have been relesed.
That and ATI has a red logo and i like the colour red

Just upgraded my long in the tooth ATI Radeon 9550 ( ) for a nice new ATI x1950 AGP... ... It sounds like a hairdyer in operation, but can't half fly.... (in my 3.04 GHz P4 and 1.5Gb ram)
X2 rolling demo benchmark 9550 - 20 FPS on default settings
X2 rolling demo benchmark x1950- 97 FPS on full settings (with the shadows on it knocks off 30FPS)
Shame I have to wait so long to afford decent hardware to play the game I love in all its visual glory
Now... what resolution / settings do u recommend I should play X3 on ?? ie max screen, but whats all the AA x4 x8 stuff about?
Thanks all
