Best Graphics For £100
yes its a small amount of money given todays graphics requirements. However for £100 what would you guys say is the best graphics card that will work WELL with X3
Look in the off-topic board for suggestions in the numerous threads that are on this subject already.

not just in the us, alot of ppl have managed to unlock them to 16 pipelines, especially the newer batchsX-Morgan wrote:Try and go for one of the 6800 LE Editions, they can be unlocked (if you are VERY lucky) and unlock all 12 pipes and that should give you nice GFX in X3, some guy in the US managed to unlock all 16 pipes on the LE.....lucky git
the leadteks have one of the best succes rates for doing this
but even as standard, the 6800LE are still pretty good gfx cards, and should be fine for x3

Watch out for the Gforce Nvidia 6800XT card that is about to be released it is aimed at the budget gamers market and should be better tha a 6600gt in that it has more pipes and is 256bit rather than 128 bit processing - they should be out for about £120 shop around though & go for a good make as they tend to put faster memory & better heatsinks on

Where did you hear 6600GT's are 128 bit?Captain Kremen wrote:Watch out for the Gforce Nvidia 6800XT card that is about to be released it is aimed at the budget gamers market and should be better tha a 6600gt in that it has more pipes and is 256bit rather than 128 bit processing - they should be out for about £120 shop around though & go for a good make as they tend to put faster memory & better heatsinks on

That's mine right there, and it's most deffinately 256 bit.

I cant understand that unless there are a mixture of chips on different manufactures cards I thought it was based on the Nvidia NV43 chipsetMopy wrote:Where did you hear 6600GT's are 128 bit?Captain Kremen wrote:Watch out for the Gforce Nvidia 6800XT card that is about to be released it is aimed at the budget gamers market and should be better tha a 6600gt in that it has more pipes and is 256bit rather than 128 bit processing - they should be out for about £120 shop around though & go for a good make as they tend to put faster memory & better heatsinks on

as stated on toms hardware - not like that site to be wrong + I bought a 6800GT last month after seeing how it outperformed the 6600GT

Looks like you could be right. It's amazing though how many contradictions there are. Searching on Google, there's lots of reviews and other stores that state they're using a 256bit version. There's others that say there is no 256bit version too. Strange indeed.
Still rather have a 6800GT though. Wasn't a buy one get one free by any chance?

To date I have not found a game (RTW, Silent Hunter III, HL2, X2, battlefield 2, Guild Wars) that has displayed any significant slow down with the extras on. I can only state that in my experience this is a stable card that performs well. I have seen now it can be picked up for 80 US dollars (about 45 Quid).CBJ wrote:The 6600GT is a much better card for only a few pounds/dollars/euros more. Also in this range are the X800GT and the X800GTO, both of which are also considerably better than the 5700.muppetts wrote:The FX 5700 256mb is mid ranged, has pixel shading support (x3) and comes in at 100 quid.

Its the memory bandwidth that is 128it on the 6600 cardsCaptain Kremen wrote:I cant understand that unless there are a mixture of chips on different manufactures cards I thought it was based on the Nvidia NV43 chipsetMopy wrote:Where did you hear 6600GT's are 128 bit?Captain Kremen wrote:Watch out for the Gforce Nvidia 6800XT card that is about to be released it is aimed at the budget gamers market and should be better tha a 6600gt in that it has more pipes and is 256bit rather than 128 bit processing - they should be out for about £120 shop around though & go for a good make as they tend to put faster memory & better heatsinks on

I didnt spot that I think your right
Sites also embarassingly get the 256bit and 256Mb mixed up
either way the 6600GT is a good card but there is a heck of an increase with the 6800GT have the AGP version and it beats my friends duel 6600GT PCI-e cards hands down on most benchmarks & Game demos
Not sure what the 6800XT is going to be yet - bobably a hybrid but hopefully around the £100

May I make a suggestion.
I have noticed over the last couple of days an increase in threads about graphics cards and computer upgrades in preparation for X3. Some of these are being locked as they are considered duplication. That's OK as maybe the posters of the later threads should have used search, but that is not the most friendly tool to use.
So I suggest maybe that a thread about graphics cards and computer upgrades re X3 is stickied so that people can see it straight away. This may stop what will become a deluge of threads as the release date gets nearer, as people will obviously want to get the best they can out of X3 when it is here.
