Otherwise, a good 6800 or an X800 should be fine, and they are of course a lot cheaper. If you bought a 7800 you would also have to upgrade your motherboard and maybe your PSU, and also maybe your CPU if you have an old one that is no longer catered for in the current PCI-e range.

I wouldn't though, I already have upgraded to new everything but didn't have the money at the time to get a new grafics card. Would it make a diference at 1280 X 1024, that is the maximum my 17" LCD monitor supports.

4 GB RAM
2.4 ghz OC AMD 3500
2 PCI-e sli redy board
2 200 GB SATA HD in RAID 0 configuration
Windows 64-bit edition-(I hope X3 suports this)

4GB or RAM!!!????? :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
i think 1 is enough, 2 would be good, but 4?!
maybe some of the ram money could have gone towards a new graphics card as i really dont think 2gb and 4gb is going to make any noticable difference.

the current generation will all current games fine on high-res but the 7800 just does it better... if you buy a 7800 then you wont have to upgrade so soon but if your on a budget then the gf6800 or x800 are still good.

I agree, no point buying a new motherboard, processor, etc. until the 6000 series just won't do, but they're still the best value for some of the best cards out there at the moment (yes, even the 6800 Ultra with the release of the 7800 GTX).

EDIT I: And, by the way, 4 gigs of RAM is insane. In fact, I wasn't aware of any motherboards that could support 4 gigs? Unless you have an Alienware PC with the 4 gig option, or (by some amazing feat) 2 gig RAM sticks loaded on yer rig, then I am stumped how you got that figure.

EDIT II: Ah! I know! Do you have an Alienware Area-51 3500? It sounds like one to me, due to the processor.

i would just be 4 x 1gb, and 1gb sticks are insanely expensive as you can only get high performance ones, eg kingston hyperX, 1gb of that is insanely expensive, let alone 4.... :o
but i wouldnt mind using 4gb though... i'm using 1gb now on my new pc but i might and anpother 2x512...

There are some 2gb DDR2 RAM sticks I've seen, but it's £100+ for just one. and 512mb, 1gb or 2gb is more than enough.

yeah it was expensive even from a vender site ($80 X 4)

I have never used more than a gig of my 6 GB page/swap file but my mother board said 4 gb was the max it could make use of and I DID pay a premium for it to make use of that much ram so..........

EDIT:
BTW: I benched marched my memory before and after and got a good increse in performance. I think it is due to the fact that i had them in the bank in a way where it could not use the DDR support (where it writes half in one stick while writting half in the other and is able to read the info twice as fast)

Before score on 2 GB using Nvidia Tune : 77
After w/4 GB ram: 162 :o (Its still under the 177 "base line Nvidia suggests)

The more ram the better for 3d programs like 3d studio max/maya/lightwave for rendering. I would love to have as much as i could get but my motherboard can only accept 1 gig (2 slots).
