New PC build.

Post by Redvers Ganderpoke » Tue, 15. Nov 22, 18:00

My daughter has decided that it's time for a new PC that she's away at Uni studying Computer Science. We've got a budget of about £1000 give or take.
It will be not be a gaming PC, primarily it will be used as a graphics workstation running Clip Studio paint EX which she uses with a HD monitor graphics tablet. It's secondary function will be to support her degree and finally a bit of casual gaming.

Her current PC is a frankenstein PC with scavenged parts (I7 2700K and MSI MB) and reasonably new parts (relatively), PSU, GTX 1050, 512gb SSD. The i7 2700k is now showing it's age, not bad considering it's 11 years old.

I was thinking of something like:-

AMD Ryzen 5 5600 £140
Crucial P3 1TB Nvme £71
Generic case £40 ( may change depending on budget so I don't cut my fingers on raw metal edges)
RTX 3060 £370 (or a 3060ti about £100 more)
Corsair 32GB 3600mhz £107
750w PSU £85
asus prime b550 £104.99
total £918

I did look at the AM5 but I think the MB and CPUs are too expensive for this budget.

There is also the option to sub the RTX 3060 for an ARC a770 (a bit of gamble though) or a Radeon rx 6700xt / RX6750xt.

Opinions please....

My opinion is that by saying "it will not be a gaming PC", that really removes the need for the 3060. The GTX 1050 from the old PC would probably perfectly fit the needs.

I think you'd need a 6gb card for some graphic applications, so the 3060 is a decent choice, but even the 1660 (much cheaper) would allow the ultrawide resolutions.
“Man, my poor head is battered,” Ed said.

“That explains its unusual shape,” Styanar said, grinning openly now. “Although it does little to illuminate just why your jowls are so flaccid or why you have quite so many chins.”

“I…” Had she just called him fat? “I am just a different species, that’s all.”

“Well nature sure does have a sense of humour then,” Styanar said. “Shall we go inside? It’d not be a good idea for me to be spotted by others.”

Ditch the GPU (i've possibly got a spare GTX 1060 6gb) and go for an AM5 system instead? ( Approx. £200 MB and $330 for CPU)

You can try

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildmeapc/

You can look at prices in pcparticker for deals. You can also use Honey or Camel Camel Camel to see past deals to judge prices. Flash deals might not get shown in the charts. Like flash deals from Prime Day sales.

If your in the UK there's the reddit pc sales deals thread. Not very busy. https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsalesuk/

For the US https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/ For Canada https://www.reddit.com/r/bapcsalescanada/ Might be others for other regions.

Might ask in the reddits forum specifically related to what they are doing. Cpu heavy? Gpu heavy? Lots of reads and writes (hdd might not be a good idea)?

If your running stuff at 100% for hours might need good case cooling?

Default cpu cooler ok? Might be able to cap power limits and/or temperature in the bios. Cpu doesn't seem to draw much power so cooling not as much of a concern. 65w?

Bios supports the cpu so no issues with having to flash the bios to support the cpu. Assuming this is the mainboard. PRIME B550-PLUS

Can see memory stats in the mainboards qvl list assuming it's the right mainboard. Need to change the list to ryzen 5 from the default of ryzen 3.

https://www.asus.com/us/motherboards-co ... vl_memory/

Make sure the psu is 750w or pretty close on the +12v rail. Some psu can say 750w or so but can only produce 550w or so on the 12v which runs your gpu and cpu. Need watch the rating on each rail also. Like might be 300w on each rail but total of 550w combined limit. Likely not an issue but the psu might end up in another build someday.

Parts seem ok based on amazon and newegg reviews. If the parts make it through the first 2 weeks they should be fine for quite a while.

What monitor are they using? 4k, 1440p, 1080p? 60Hz, etc...
