Some nice squad footage:

2:50 - That's probably one of those small and stupid things that, if unlucky would get you and people aroung you killed.
5:55 - Ukrainian squad leader doing trench assault.

In Immortal words of namess Ukrainian soldier "we are so lucky, they are so f*cking dumb".

It hit harder, when you realize, people in western social media were screaming for months that simply dumping dragon teeth on soft soil won't work at all :D
At least in WW2 Germans were smart enough to attach/impale or concrete these dragon teeth into te soil...not that it slow down allies in any significant amount :D

Some mapped stretches of unfixed obstacles can be left deliberately (hopefully without it being too obvious to others as to where) to allow quicker removal for advances and retreats through those lanes by your own side.

Even those stretches though would be no easy thing to shift by hostile forces if also under direct attack or indirect fire. It is quite common to throw in some (also mapped and removable) lines of antitank mines to protect the more vulnerable unfixed obstacle lanes.

I cannot say this was necessarily the case in the video, which could perhaps be more a technical demonstration, nor whether it applies in general to the Russian defensive lines.

That is very well said Alan, perhaps a reality check for some. Especially considering the heavy use of mines by the Russians. I certainly would not want to be in a tank doing that, in this war.

While this is not directly related to the war, it is a good look at the Russian tanks that are being used in said war.

Correct. While I have no love for the Kremlin, the video in question is just a staged propaganda shot for the easily excited crowd.

Still, what are the odds, after all we have seen, that Russia was able to make competent defense line bigger than Maginot line, in less than a year?
What are the odds they have enough of competent personel to man those lines?

In WW2 both French and Germans had much more time, resources and competences to make their defense lines, yet ultimately they failed.
I don't expect Russia to turn into genius of defense art overnight.

If we would be talking about entry points to Crime'a, or Donbas, where both sides made fortifications for nearly decade - yeah, this could be a nightmare.
Everywhere else is just a speed bump.

While that is something youtubers and reddit users love to postulate about, that is not something I would dare to predict either way and certainly not based on a staged video of a tankdozer/eng tank doing its stuff.
To paraphrase another, far smarter man than I am -"Russia is never as strong as she looks; Russia is never as weak as she looks." So...beats me?

unclear goals, lack of will to fight or die, apolitical subjects are all problematic for effective wars

LOL so funny:
Andrei Kelin, Russia's ambassador to the UK, told the BBC his country had "enormous resources" and it was yet to "act very seriously".
So Russia has just been playing around so far and have not taken the war serious yet.

Tens of thousands dead, possibly over one hundred thousand wounded, and they are not taking it seriously, they have so many resources they are using tanks from WW2. About the only thing they are not taking seriously, is their comments on the war.

Indeed - wasting a whole offensive and with it the last bit of reputation of their armed forces is "just part of the plan".

Maybe it's the same with their T-14 - they just taking their time to suddendly surprise everyone.

If this was done done by Ukraine aligned forces, then it is not good. Attacks against civilian targets are not only amoral, but easily exploitable for propaganda.

Aye - that's plain wrong to harm any civilians.

But "easily exploited" - not sure about that one. We are / "our propaganda" is condemning russia for bombarding civilian targets since the war started. They / Putin even admitted that they are doing this on purpose. (article @ businessinsider.com)

To no avail so far - as it is still happening. :(

So we all forgot the Rebellion in Bakhmut a few days ago? I somehow doubt from all perspectives Ukraine having much to do with that, beginning with the question "what could Ukraine gain from that?"
