While we eagerly await X4, here's an interesting game that you can play in the meantime. It's free and open-source, so if you can make some mods, even better.

It's a space game with a dynamic campaign in which you take part in a battle across a sector. You start out in a fighter, and as you climb the ranks, you are given command of bigger ships, eventually commanding the carrier, as well as every ship of the fleet. Your actions also have weight. Lose a destroyer in battle, and your forces are permanently weakened. It is absolutely possible to lose the war.
