I had the same reaction when I learned Queen was doing the soundtrack for Highlander. Of course, I was delighted when I learned ACDC did the sountrack for Maximum Overdrive, too. :)

Music is a pretty important part of video games. I think it always has been. Sure, there was a time when there wasn't really "music" in video games. The "thud thud thud" for Space Invaders isn't exactly "music." But, you combine that with the player firing and various 'splosions and you can manage a "beat."

"Deafening Silence." How often is that an attractive quality in a video game? I'm really trying to think when true "silence" has ever presented a value-added game element. Maybe in some "stealth" game situations? Just to make the action phase that much more dramatic?

A cross between Deus Ex and GTA V? Sign me up! Mankind Divided had lots of wasted opportunities (e.g. Golem City) but it seems that this game will deliver.

All you need to play or finish is the original Deus Ex.
... what is a drop of rain, compared to the storm? ... what is a thought, compared to the mind? ... our unity is full of wonder which your tiny individualism cannot even conceive ... I've heard it all before ... you're saying nothing new ... I thought I saw a rainbow ... but I guess it wasn't true ... you cannot make me listen ... I cannot make you hear ... you find your way to heaven ... I'll meet you when you're there ...

Agreed. Yet to be topped by any of the sequel / prequels. :)

Yeah I must admit I've only ever played the original Deus Ex.. just haven't got around to playing all the sequels and keep hearing that they're inferior. The last couple look pretty good though!

Is it sad that I've watched the 45 min Cyberpunk gameplay footage like 3 times now lol? I just can't get enough of it. Takes me back to so many films like blade Runner, Minority Report, Judge Dread (90s and especially 2012 version), 5th element etc. Reminds me that I need to check out that recent cyberpunk TV show called Altered Carbon! Mates keep talking about it being really good.

I play a lot of futuresynth, 80s synth, retro synth music on youtube and the videos are often accompanied by cool animations of retro futuristic cars driving through cyberpunk style dystopian cities at night with glowing blue and purple nights. In the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay footage when you see them get in the retro sportscar and drive around the city GTA5 style I knew right away that there's gonna be moments where I break off from the main game just go for a drive at night playing some tunes haha.

I know that "sex sells," but... I'm a bit tired of it.

It's not that I don't think a video game should avoid it, it's that whenever I see it, I think less of the game that advertises it. Because they "went there" I just see it as needless pandering.

Sure, if nudity is in a game, that's fine. Even if there's "sex" that's not a big deal. (Though I question the ethics of doing that as well as any game-related justification for it.)

So, when I saw "side-boob" and a glimpse of nipple on an attractive female character, that took a potential "Star" from my "out of five stars" rating.

Ideally, for a game like this, I'd like to see an Egosoft X Game version, where there's a huge open world, a lot of world-building variables for the player to modify, a bit of Warband thrown in and a few deep Storyline quests for the player to build their play around.

If this game ends up being like a linear "kill five rats and get a level while you steal the detonator codes to diffuse the bomb and collect the materials you need to improve your blaster so you can defeat the miniboss in the next mission" I'm not going to like it no matter how it looks, how big the e-tiddies are or how rich the developers say the setting is, but fail to let you actual experience how rich it is.

I agree the needless nudity in advertisement is lazy marketing. Though with Cyberpunk being a hommage to, well, the Cyberpunk genre, I think sex or sexual imagery at least makes a lot more sense in this game than in many others.

A hypersexualised world and widespread Cybersex have always been topics in most Cyberpunk novals. After all one of the core ideas of the Cyberpunk genre is a bluring between the virtual world and reality and the virtual word consits of a lot of porn and sexualised imagery that gets plastered in your face, even at times when you don't want it. In that regard having nudity in the advertisment for Cyberpunk 2077 is almost meta, altough I don't think that this was the idea of the marketing team.
"The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn't have the weight of gender expectations." - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This probably needs its own topic, but the commodification of sex has been with us for a while now (and I'm not just talking about cam girls on Twitch or unsubtle TV ads).

For example, selling sex is normal in music:

Pop Music (Example1, Example2, Example3)

Jazz (Example)

Classical Music (Example1, Example2, Example3)

Also, we could post an entire forum worth of images from films, but this example is probably one of the most recognizable.

My point? (Pixelated) sex has been around video games for a long time, and there's no sign that it's going away. I also agree that a game like Cyberpunk actually needs sex to make that world believable. Why? Look at our society. You know that we're saturated with sex when our Berlusconi-style president has an affair with a porn star and the bigger scandal is whether the hush money was in violation of campaign finance laws.

I am disappointed... Not one of those links had any nudity in it! :)

I do agree with this.

However, I was more a bit miffed that pandering to a younger, hormonally turbulent, male audience with side-boob and aureola shots was a bit too much.

I have very healthy sexual attitudes, so I'm no prude. :) The game is a "Game", for me, not a chance to enact my pixelated sexual fantasies. I suppose if I my hormones were still raging every time I saw a large swath of skin-tone color on my PC screen that I might feel a bit differently. But, with all this in mind, when I saw the overtly sexually suggestive scenes, the first thing I thought was "Oh, come on, that's just plain cruel, like Crack-Baby Basketball for gamers or something..."

They didn't show that shot in order to show off their rigging or character details. They didn't show that shot to show how realistic the world was or that the game dealt with a mature setting in a dystopic word. They showed that shot to glue adolescent eyeballs to the screen and to get some blood pumping every time the game is mentioned. :)

I agree that -for marketing purposes- the use of nudity can be of bad taste or simply unnecessary (just like the revealing dresses of Yuja Wang or Khatia Buniatishvili). But let's remember, sex grabs the attention and penetrates the public discourse. You don't want to blow a load of cash on a game or artist unless you have a rock-hard strategy that will shower you with benefits. It's imperative to be solidly inside your demographic's mindset, which is where market research comes in.

I would note that "Sex sells" isn't just a marketing ploy for the computer game, it's a strong element of the setting (both Johnny Silverhand & Alt were depicted as physically attractive [until Alt got uploaded at least]), & one of the early supplements, the 1st gear-p**n book included the "Mr Studd(tm)" & (IIRC) "Lady Midnight(tm)" cyber-implants for improved... social... performance.

There were probably rules for other more cosmetic surgeries as well, but I disposed of all my DTF gaming material last time I moved so I can't conveniently check.

Hell, I'm pretty sure that Morgan Blackhand(?) & Rache Bartmoss were less than handsome was relevant to their character backgrounds.

This awesome E3 trailer with Keanu Reeves is old news now I know.. but apparently the full big gameplay footage they privately showed at E3 will be out soon publicly at Gamescon. Can't wait to sit down and take it all in like I did with the last big 45min one haha.

Late answer. You can buy the original Deus Ex and then dowload the GMDX (Give Me Deus Ex) mod. Do not run from original .exe but rather from GMDX .exe. Configure renderer to Direct3D 10 support and limit your FPS to 60. I think the game runs well on pretty much any hardware, I'm running it now on an RX 580 but I also ran it on an ATI Radeon 4850 (I think that one ran better with the Direct3D 9 option in "renderer"). Playing Deus Ex now is like rewatching The Empire Strikes Back. Sure, The Last Jedi has a clearer image and better special effects but you can't beat a classic. Similarly, Deus Ex doesn't look as good as Ghost Recon Breakpoint or even Fallout 76 but...

Back on topic:
The company courted controversy with a teaser trailer in 2013 depicting a half-naked woman sitting in the rain as a SWAT team aim their guns at her. Feminists attacked the game over claims of sexual objectification.
Link

AFAIK we cannot upload images directly to the forum (and I don't want to sign up for a hosting service just for a few pics) but I already preordered the game and it's in my library. I hope that the devs don't make any concessions to these people (most likely they're not interested in playing the game anyway). The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is supposed to be messed up: look at our own society, today's superficial people like Olivia Jade, those Kardashian characters, or so many other vapid, fabricated personalities with fake body parts who walk around under mountains of makeup. Look at them and tell me that our society doesn't have much in common with the game's world. Never mind the game's sexual objectification, visit social media and consider how many women are objectifying themselves today.

I really struggle to take anything or anyone serious when they have a good thing to say about Fallout 76, even if it is just to say how good it looks.

Lol, yes. Bethesda and bugs go together like bread and butter, or Wall Street and prostitution rings.

There seem to be a lot of people online (not you, obviously!) going nuts about this, and I don't understand why. I'd rather they delayed it six months to make sure it's as good as they can get it, rather than release early and maybe dilute the experience.
