Opinion please on if X3 TC is playable on my computer.

Post by apricotslice » Sun, 9. Nov 08, 23:36

I finally got to see the boxed version in my local store the other day, and I notice that the box specs are different to what was advised in here a while ago. The lesser spec makes me wonder if the game is playable on my computer, as I had originally discounted it as not likely.

Opinions please, but as this is a notebook, nothing is changeable, so there is no point in giving upgrade suggestions. Just give me a straight answer as to if the game will run, and how well if it will.

Thanks.

You're definitely on the low end of the scale, so I can't imagine the game will run amazingly well.

Your best bet would be to download the rolling demo now that it's available - it should give you a better indication than asking people, as 'whether it's playable' is so subjective.

This also belongs in off-topic, as the system requirements sticky specifically requests not to post these sorts of queries in tech support.

I don't know, the rolling demo doesn't seem to be too good of an indicator on how well the real game runs. Sure, it has all the graphics, but it doesn't run the universe.

I get 30-60 fps on the rolling demo and sometimes as low as 10 on the real game, for instance.

I agree with Elucca

The graphics are not the problem with X3, its the immense CPU activity it requires due to all the scripts and calculations being fired off.

would it load up?

yes.

would it be at a playable speed. severely doubt it.

before my flat mates pc got upgraded, (by me :D), it had an amd 3500+, (2.2ghz iirc), and an 8600gts with 1 gig of ram. And it was not a pleasant experience....

That and the sounds, all the stutters I've noticed in my game appear to be sound related.

@mattstint - lovely imagery. You've made a couple of borderline comments like this recently. Can you please clean it up a bit.

Correct about the demo and CPU usage - didn't consider that. It would give an idea on the graphics side of things though.

hey, apricotslice (- how are you, these days?) :)

- get your Windows OS updated to Service Pack 3 - anyway..

- the game thrashes about a bit at first, probably as the encyclopedia and all that jazz gets loaded up
- alongside all the graphics finery - and it DOES look pretty amazing..!!

- it settles down after a while - I find the longer I play, the better it performs..

- you'd need at least 10G of HD space - and the 6200 Go gfx card will be crushed
- also you will definitely need a better (bigger!) CPU - X3:TC is a bit of a monster!! :D
- the whole universe is running in BETA mode - we're working on it.. beep..!! :D

You wanted a straight answer so I'll be blunt: forget it. With a CPU that is basically below minimum specification, a graphics card that is borderline, memory that's below recommended, and on-board sound, your poor laptop doesn't stand much of a chance. Rather than try the game and be disappointed, I suggest you wait until you have something a bit more meaty to run it on.

Thats about what I thought, but I thought I should check.

As a new computer is probably about 6 months away, I guess you guys will have to leave me behind.

BugMeister, I'm good. I left off X3 for a while (waiting for the new game to come out) and played Sins for a bit, then what I learnt about modding there, I went back and modded a couple of the older games and replayed them. So I've actually been on the Sins forum instead of here for a while, but that too has ended.

Having just been overseas, getting a new computer at the moment is out of the question.

So I guess my guides and mods will fall by the wayside now, since I wont be able to renew them for the new game.

Theres a few threads I still get notifications on, so I sort of keep in touch with the board, and will continue to do so. And as soon as I can justify a new computer, I'll be back !

I tried the rolling demo just now, and was averaging 18fps, although it dropped to 1 at one point.

So I guess the indication is that the game will run, even if its not playable. That might be enough to allow me to update my mods and scripts. Worth a try anyway.

what you have to remember is that the rolling demo is purely a demo of the graphics engine.

when you play the game proper, it is constantly simulating all of the activity of the x-universe, all the npc traders, factories, military ships etc.... this is the problem for your pc, as it will simply not be able to cope by a large margin. I can guarantee that you will not enjoy the experience...

I know. But it will at least allow me to get the editor working so I can upgrade my scripts and mods. I'm not going to attempt much else, thats for sure.

That shouldn't be a problem, actually - you can script easily, and just have some friend to check on the end-product performance for you.. S&M should be easily possible with anything that can start the game at all.

regrettably, I wouldn't be any use to you, apricotslice

this m/c can barely cope with TC as it is - so I'm in the same boat as you
maybe when I've upgraded - but that won't be for some time yet..

nonetheless, it's good to hear you're back in the swim!! :)
