From what I've read so far it turns I-War 2 into an open-ended game.

Old news, the freeform does little more than let you continue playing after you've completed the main script, there is no real trade system ships only appear in the normal random ways, nothing happens in short.

real shame, I-War 2 should have been a full trader

I-War 2 was such a good game!!

I've played it over several times because I loved the characters, the story and the flight model.

It was underappreciated.

Such a great game...

but anyway, there are also many other mods- ifleet lets you own "capture" ships with marines, and future trader. I tinkered around with these mods for about two days but they couldn't bring any real life to the game that wasn't already there.

You are absolutely correct, there is an old mod that allowed you to keep playing after the game missions ended.

The mod I'm referring to, however, released in October 2003, makes you a miner in Sol System.

I am downloading it and will provide details at a later date.
