Hoping for some help fixing this weird problem, I have never come across before. I am trying to install X3R 2.0 from disc to Windows 10. I removed the previous install, after I messed it up, and used Ccleaner to fix the registry, after I manually deleted what files and folders were left behind. However:
Problem 1:
I have tried to install the game to the directory it was in before. But I get an error at the point after I choose the directory (C\Games\Egosoft\X3 Reunion) I want to use and the type of install I want to do, as follows
Error 183 unable to create file when that file already exists.
So I thought I would try and install in a different directory. (C/Games/X3 Reunion) However:
Problem 2:
Even though it seemed to work, i cannot see the installed directory at all. But the game loaded to the start screen no problem?? It also did not create a shortcut, and the game does not appear in the installed apps and programs section. Also. When I tried to install again, I get a message saying that the directory already exists? Even though I cannot see it, and even Cycrows installer does not find installation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Too often we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you, it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown. But only 4 to extend your arm and slap the bugger!
In Win10, click on the Windows button bottom left of screen, then select File Explorer, View tab, then tick the 'Hidden Items' checkbox. Now at least you should be seeing all folders and files.
You need to look further into what problems of installation have arisen. One thing to remember is that you must patch to latest version *before* trying to run the game after installation or Win10 and the old DRM will fall out in a big way.

That box already has a tick in it still cant see anything.

Thats another problem. I cannot patch to version 2.5 because I cannot get the installer to point to my X3R folders. Because.......it cant see them either.

Hmm, then if Win10 is not letting you do commonplace tasks that you should be able to then there could be a problem with the OS installation or set-up. Are you in an Administrator account and logged in as Administrator?
I wonder if running the game with the old DRM present is the cause of this issue?
You could just install and patch the game immediately on another machine and then move all the gamefiles across - if that helps at all and you have another system available.
If all fails then post a DxDiag here and I can have a look at it.

Just a guess, as I'm not using Windows 10: Could this have something to do with the files being placed in the Virtual Store? (In case that is still present in Win 10.)
What you could also try is performing a manual installation, simply copying the files from discs to a self-created folder called X3 Reunion somewhere on your harddrive and applying the 1.0 -> 2.5 patch then.

Haha. Its actually me. I havnt been here for along time.

My account is an Admins account. I even tried setting up a new account. Just incase. Same result. Cant see any folders.

Errrrrr....does that have something to do with the old CD protection thingy?? I had no problems installing the game before I made Windows 8 become Windows 10 btw.

I dont have access to another system, I'm afraid.

dumb question. How do you do that in Windows 10?

Too often we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you, it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown. But only 4 to extend your arm and slap the bugger!
You can most certainly update your operating system.
Yours is still:
Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 10240) (10240.th1_st1.151104-1714)
This is the latest updated Win10 Home x64 version:
Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 10586) (10586.th2_release.151121-2308)
That might sort your OS issues out.
Your system is reporting many Windows Update failures and some Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool problems. So the above update may not be straightforward. In Win10 remember to allow a System Restart (not just a power down and later power up) between batches of updates.
As an aside and not related to your issue here, I see you are using a Beta AMD graphics driver and that your IDT sound driver is out of date enough to not be optimised for Win10.
Just a thought - make sure that UAC or any other security applications that you run are not blocking or quarantining the entire X3 install through seeing its obsolete DRM drivers as possible system threats.
looks like you were right about it not being straightforward! I had to download the malicious software tool manually. that seemed to clear it from the update list.
next was the windows 10 update. Just before I called it a night I left it at 50% preparing for install. I have checked it this morning and it is still at 50% preparing for installation.
Looks like its stuck. I will try again after work.

I have an up to date system according to Windows Update. But I still have the same problem. This is really weird. Or it is to me anyway. When I tried again, the installer can 'see' the previous install. infact it even confirms this by telling me the directory already exists. But, Windows Explorer, or File Explorer or whatever it's called, still cannot see the directory. And it still does not appear in the Apps and Features list either.

Right so you can see the C: Games folder contents, just not the X3R folder in there. That really does sound like a block/quarantine by some watchdog application - or an installer redirect.
Idle thought - have you searched for 'Egosoft' on your system to see what crops up? Maybe something in Program Files (x86) for example?
I have just done a search of all things Egosoft on Drive C, and I think we might have something. It came up with a folder located in the following directory:
C:\VTRoot\HarddiskVolume4\Program Files (x86)
Inside there is the relative Egosoft folder, along with, surprise, surprise, an X3 Reunion Folder!! Which also appears to have all the relevant files and folders in it!
Infact. it appears all my attempted installs are here. As there is also another directory inside the folder HarddiskVolume4 called Games. Which also appears to have a full install of X3 Reunion inside.
Bloody typical! Why do computers just decide to do their own thing??
Okay. What would you suggest next?

You are probably using Comodo Internet Security and it is quarantining any installs it doesn't like or gives false positive detections for - and without telling you!. I hate it when applications do that. I guess you either need to rethink your security provider or tell it to ignore some areas or sources.
Just move or reinstall the gamefiles wherever else you want (after sorting out your security) then point the patch updater at the correct folder, update the game with the all-in-one patch and hopefully you can then play it.
You may have to remove any old DRM drivers that may have been installed from previous attempts to run the unpatched game.
Alan Phipps wrote:You are probably using Comodo Internet Security
Wait? What? OMG! not only is Mr Phipps the most awesomest moderator on the Egosoft website. (que mod wars hehee) but he is psychic to!
Can you recommend another security suite to replace the crap I have please sir?

Did that. Patched to 2.5, then ran the game. didnt play my saves coz I need to install all my mod/script collection. But I managed to play the bonus scenario, without a hitch. So thats a plus. lol

"recommend another security suite" - This is not really the place (nor am I the correct person) for that but feel free to browse OT for security topics such as in this thread.
Issue fixed by removing Comodo Internet Security Suite, and replacing it with another
