Have you actually looked in Event Viewer as I linked above? You will have to check for instances after the last restore though.
The circumstances you describe *should* generate an error report there under Event Viewer (Local)/Custom Views/Adminstrative Events and then checking the listed errors for X3 relevance at the date/time of your game issues.
We are actually trying to walk you through a logical sequence of checks that should help to identify the cause of the issue - but you are changing things at your end faster than we can keep up. For example, after your restore you now need to install the correct and latest RealTek sound drivers and maybe look at your codecs all over again.
I typed in 'eventvwr ' and played with it for awhile for X3 or relevant game related info but I don't know what to look for or even what I am doing.
I didn't see anything in this (Local)/Custom Views/Adminstrative Events area..., Maybe I did something wrong. I'll keep poking around and looking. I am also looking into hiring a PC guy to help me with this as I am feeling kinda stupid and incompetent right now.
The reason I reverted back is because that realtek thing not only failed to do anything for me, but interfered with the proper operation of my screaming bee voice application used for Skype and PalTalk.
That was really the only big thing that was done...
Eventvwr takes a while to load if there are lots of errors and warnings to report and especially it hasn't been cleared out now and again. Once you select Administrative Events, give it a few minutes and the error list should have appeared by then with the latest events at the top.
Okay, I found in this 'Event Viewer' you spoke of information about the type of error that causes windows to say that 'X3 has topped working correctly.'
It is labeled as an 'application error' and says the following:

The error being reported is pretty generic (STATUS_INTEGER_OVERFLOW) and is not terribly helpful for pinpointing the cause. Please remind me whether you have verified your Steam gamesfiles cache for X3:R and the results.
If I run steam in this 'XP:SP3' mode, will it also run the game in that as well?
Also, if I find the issues do not occur will I always need to be in window mode?
If so, how can I make the window take up most of the monitor?
It will be a bit before I can test it because of work plus the fact all my saved games are gone and I need to get money and reputation first before I can know for sure the factory building issue is resolved.
Well I would wait until (or if) you get the issue again and then post here and we can take it up again from there.
You can start the game from the X3.exe file in the Steam X3:R gamefolder using admin and compatibility modes (right-click on the exe and select properties, compatibility tab for both options).
Yes a window can be sized pretty much as you wish.
Generally speaking, our suggested test scenarios are where you try things out and see if the problem goes away or changes at all. This is done so as to help to narrow down the actual cause so that it can be properly fixed and not always as suggested future ways of having to play should they help at all. However, at least you would then have a workaround for some play from that point on.
Thank you very much for your help and I will certainly give it go when I have the time.
It's just that when I asked steam to backup my game files its menu leaves one to think that saves are included; boy was I wrong. I sure like to know where the devil those saved games get put and why steam doesn't bother to include them in backups.
Yes the saves are stored in a Documents folder which Steam does not touch and so are your responsibility to safeguard and back-up. I am sure that you would be livid if Steam started automatically backing up all your *personal* document folders to the cloud or whatever!
A restore of your system to an earlier restore point should not have touched your saves that were present as at that restore point though. A factory-state system reset or a drive reformat is another matter though! Are you sure all your saves are gone?
Yes, everything is gone because I had to restore my entire system because of me messing around with a computer system I really know nothing about.
Why in the world is it placing saved game files somewhere else?? The least Steam could have done is warn me that backing "Game Files" would not include them.
Now I got to start all over and I'm not in the mood for that just now...
I loaded the game up on XP:SP3 as your instructed and also minimized the window. I still receive the same "X3 has stopped working" window whenever I attempt to build a factory.
I don't know what it is about building a factory that causes this problem because apart from that, I don't have any issues doing anything else...
CC-Cleaner is a new addition from since before. I had acquired it in my past attempts to keep the game from crashing like this. It was my hope that it would repair something; but my system shows clean.

I was playing the game last night ( avoiding factory building) and whilst in SETI waiting for a ship the game crashed with the same 'X3 has stopped working" window..
It seems to be doing it more often in random situations as the game progresses, almost as if in mock.
When you get infrequent crashes like that, it quite often turns out to be a system stability issue. If it happens particularly when the game is "stressing" your system, e.g. when running SETA which makes the PC work a lot harder, it could be something like a memory fault or possibly even the power supply not quite coping.
Given that the game has proven to be pretty stable by a large number of people over quite a few years, it's probably worth checking for these sorts of issues first. I suggest you start with some tests using tools such as memtest86 and prime95 to try loading your PC in something other than the game, and see if there are any problems.
Those programs you mentioned are not for ignorant bumbling buffoons like myself. I haven't the faintest idea what the heck these programs do and their instructions are naught but technical gibberish to me.
I want to play the game not mule over strange testing code software I know not what. This is a new advance system hand made just for my games and if it can play 200 mods of Skyrim without so much a hiccup then...
Oh very well....I'll set up an appointment with my computer technician and see if he can test for these things you mentioned.
My computer technician performed a load test and comprehensive diagnostics on all hardware including hard drive and everything is running at peak performance.
Game still inexplicably fails randomly although it does not do so during station builds now when run on XP: SP3 compatibility mode.
Has Steam itself ever played a role in such failures?

I am going to stick my neck out here and say that if running in a compatibility mode 'moves' but does not solve your CTD issue and your hardware is confirmed fine then the likelihood is that something is amiss in your current OS installation or set-up. I have the same OS and gamecode as yourself and do not have these issues so that indicates that something is possibly different in your case.
I am not suggesting that you reinstall your OS with all the heartache and further issues that such action might cause without any firm guarantee of a solution. There is a couple of non-complicated things that you can do with lesser impact and trouble but also with lower chances of finding issues:
1. Open the MSDOS Command Prompt using right-click and run as admin. Now type sfc/scannow then press enter and let that check your OS files. It takes a while but should report no issues found or that errors found have been corrected.
2. Download and run the DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime file from here. It checks the DirectX 9.0c files that X games use under DirectX 11 control. It is likely to say that you already have newer version files but is worth a shot just in case of problems.
After that and with no in-game improvement I would be running out of ideas of what further to suggest. Good luck.
I reinstalled windows and installed the essential drivers. I installed only a few third party applications such as the new CCleaner, Acronis system backup software, Nvidia application software and Perfect Disc.
The problem of X3 crashing to desktop with a 'X3 has stopped working' window persists. It persists with and without compatibility modes.
here it the current DXdiag listing:

Well I am out of ideas really. Let me list what we do know:
1. It is not the base gamecode or Steam Client because thousands play this version of the game just fine on all sorts of old and modern hardware set-ups.
2. You did a system restore to before the issue happened and it is not your OS because you have since reinstalled from scratch.
3. It is not your major hardware because a PC tech has stress-tested cpu, RAM and hard drives.
4. We have looked for and eliminated the usual suspect codecs, have updated the main device drivers and the DxDiag looks OK.
A last chance effort - please do the following:
a. Back-up your Reunion saves from your documents folder elsewhere.
b. Go into your Steam Library, right-click on Reunion and select properties and then the local files tab. Now delete local files (in Reunion only!).
c. Open your Steam games folder (Drive: ... \Steam\steamapps\common) and manually delete just the Reunion folder if it is still there.
d. Now in your Steam Library, install or verify Reunion to re-download and install it. Accept any offered library etc installs.
e. Start a fresh game (again - sorry!) and try to get it to CTD. If you are convinced it seems to work OK from a new start then bring back one of your old saves and try that. If a new start CTDs then I honestly have no idea what else to suggest.
f. If the new start is OK, but the old save CTDs then the issue is embedded in the save and you are left with having to start again with the new game install.
