Saving Failed

Post by multox » Wed, 31. Oct 07, 12:07

Last night I set up a whole slew of new factories, saved the game, then went to sleep. Its morning now and the results were great! The only problem is that now every time I try to save the game the computer says "Saving Failed."

- I saved the game (successfully), moved to the corner of the Siezewell sector, set SETA running at 1000% and let it run for 8 hours. When I came back, "Saving Failed."
- I have done this similar activity several times before without problems.
- My computer is running Vista 64
- X3 is patched to the latest. (Steam version.)
- I have over 32 GB of disk space available.
- The X99.sav file is present and cannot be deleted. (It says it is in-use by another process - obviously that process is X3 itself.)
- I tried backing up and deleting all of the other save files.
- I've been running the game for a couple weeks now and this problem just appeared for the first time just now.

My fear is that this bug is going to start reappearing at random intervals. I really want to enjoy this game, but the appearance of this problem in conjunction with many previous CTDs, is making it hard.

I've gone through the old posts (several months old) and there's no proposed solution for this except to restart X3, losing all progress. Is there any new insight into this bug?

Some additional info:

Each time I try to save, X3 is spamming hundreds or thousands times to RegOpenKey "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\APL" Desired Access: Read. Apparently it really really doesn't like that the key does not exist.

Process Monitor shows the following file activity each time I attempt to save the game, indicating that the X99.sav file is opened (but never closed) and no apparent other file system related errors.

Re: Saving Failed

Post by CBJ » Wed, 31. Oct 07, 12:20

The basic problem is that the X99.sav file is required during saving (it is a temporary file used to ensure that good savegames are not overwritten by failed saves) and if that file cannot be deleted then the game cannot save. If you cannot find a way to delete this file (sometimes a DOS prompt works for this, but possibly not under Vista) then I'm afraid you're going to have to revert to your last savegame.

How the file got into that state I'm not sure. It normally only happens when there is a crash during saving and I've not seen it happen at other times. It certainly isn't a common occurrence. Out of interest, are you running any scripts/mods?

Thanks for the reply.

In this case, there wasn't a crash between the previous save and this one. I can be confident of that because the game ran continuously between them.

From the system trace output, we can see what is most likely a true bug - although it may or may not be related to the current problem. The bug being that the X99.sav file is opened, but not closed. It appears that it may be receiving an additional file handle each time. Most likely, there is some error checking between the file open and close statements, and that error checking is resulting in a throw or return that prevents the close from being reached. (If this is the case it may appear as a memory leak also.)

I am running the generic X3 software as downloaded by steam, with the addition of Bonus Package 3.1.07. There are no other scripts/mods/cheats/hax etc applied.

At this point, I restarted the game. This fixed my problem and I am able to save normally now. I'm just hoping that these additional details here can help your developers track down and squash that bug.

This "bug" would have to be rather well hidden, given that thousands of people are running the game many for hundreds of hours each, and as far as I'm aware you are the only one to have encountered it. Even if it did turn out to be some problem with the game rather than, as seems rather more likely, with the specific circumstances on your PC at that particular time, it is evidently extremely rare. Feel free to report any further occurrences of the problem, but unless it is proven to be rather more than just a one-off I doubt anyone will waste time trying to trace it further.

Hmmm... are you saying that just because people aren't reporting a problem that it's extremely rare? I applaud you if you personally take the time to register a forum account and report every single bug that you encounter with other software that you use. If more people did that, bugs would be much easier to locate.

X3 is a wonderful game, but it does have an occasional bug. I wish I had the time to help the devs track them all down. Most of the time though, I just get annoyed for a while then restart the game. Is it possible that other people feel the same way? However, in this case there actually are several other posts on these same forums about the same problem.

To dismiss my problem as "specific circumstances on your PC" makes me feel small and unappreciated - even if it is true. Maybe it isn't a common problem, but is that a good reason to blame my poor, defenseless computer?

You might consider that a bug can manifest itself in different ways depending on a PC's configuration. For example, I have 8 GB of ram installed on this machine, so a file handle leak that exhibits as a memory leak may cause CTDs on other systems - but because of the large amount of memory available to the kernel on my system, it would be more likely to manifest itself when it ran out of file handles - which might cause the inability to save the game. Is anyone on these forums experiencing CTDs?

I sure don't expect the Egosoft devs to jump on each and every post - but please don't make us feel like nuisances when we try to help!

After reviewing my last post, I must apologize for being too harsh. My emotions got the better of me. Egosoft does a really great job in these forums at responding to the tech support requests. Perfection is beyond all of us and I am too easy to take umbrage.

Let me at this point offer my appreciation and thanks to a company that takes it tech support board seriously.

you might try 2 options - the first is a program called "killbox" (don't have the link handy but it's quite well known) which can delete files (though for the most stubborn it requires a reboot)

the second is, sometimes files that are locked like that will still let you move them :) worth a try

I didn't intend to give the impression that your report was not useful or important. Indeed a detailed report such as the one you provided would be a huge help if a definite bug had been identified, especially if it was reproducible.

The point I was trying to get across was that the statistical likelihood of the problem being a bug in the game is much lower than that of it being a fault, one-off or otherwise, with your system. Spending time trying to track it down in the game, especially if it cannot be reliably reproduced, would leave you no better off than you are now and would therefore be a poor use of everyone's time, not least yours. It is far more effective to chase the possible causes with higher probabilities first and then resort to the lower probability options later if necessary.

So, if you find this does happen again and are able to provide a savegame that consistently exhibits the problem after a period of time, then please do report back. We can then see whether the that savegame has the same problem on another PC and further narrow down the possible causes either way.

I had this same problem. Can not save and gives "Saving Failed" error. I found and did delete the X99.sav, however with no effect. Each time I attempt to save, it recreates the file.

Running Steam version.
Windows 7 64-bit.
X3: Albion Prelude version 2.5.2

Yes, that's why you have to delete it. The file is created during saving and deleted when the process completes. If something prevents the save from finishing then it may get left behind. If something else causes the file to remain open then the game can't delete and recreate it the next time around, which is why you occasionally need to remove it manually.

However given that this thread is a good 5 years old, I'm not sure your reply is going to make much difference to anyone who has posted in it before. If you are still having this problem yourself then please make a new thread in the X3TC/X3AP Tech Support forum and provide the information requested in the very first thread in that forum. Without it there isn't much chance of us being able to help.

How I fixed this

Post by Insatiable » Mon, 10. Feb 14, 03:48

So, I fixed this by making a shortcut in Win 7 to the executable. Then I altered the properties to run as Administrator. NOTE: This change must be made in two spots in the shortcut! It must be an Administrator for all Users. Because what happens is on some Win 7 builds, X3 doesn't have enough authority to modify the contents of the save folder.
