Splits Appear

The Trade Guild finally receive the delivery of the crafted fine meals. The reason behind the Guilds requests was the recent opening of new trading opportunities with the connection to the gate network of another cluster of inhabited systems.
It is good to find out information, its better if you can verify it yourself particularly if there are Teladi involved. Running my own survey of Profit Centre Alpha our discovery of a newly activated jump gate demonstrates the information as accurate. Dal Busta than asks me to return to Grand Exchange in order to share what he has learned about the recent connection.

The most recent connection allows a number of Split to rejoin with the current network. These returning Split are proud families organised under the High Priest of Zyarth, a Family that has established dominance in the region.
A lot of well connected parties try to influence politics there and as political outsiders we won’t stand a chance.
– Dal Busta

There’s not just the standard Split hierarchy. There is also collection of unaffiliated families, outcasts and criminals. They call themselves the Free Families.
The Free Families however are a messy bunch. Political structures here are quite obscure, but also not as established. Nevertheless they are a formidable force and could turn the tide for the Split.
This is why we need to establish better connections there, to learn how to use the political situation for our benefit. It won’t be easy. From what I’ve gathered most Split are not particularly keen on working with outsiders.
– Dal Busta

What can I do? I ask Dal
With the reconnection of the gates, there are still some Split who are concluding their businesses here in order to return to their families and culture. In order to learn more about them, you should offer your ship as a means of transport.
Ferry random Split in order to make friends?
Of course not, I have found one Split in particular who I suspect is well connected to either the Free Families or the Patriarchy occupation there. He aroused some suspicion. Apparently he makes the trip regularly under different names, so he could be some sort of smuggler who potentially has ties to the other side. You should help him out to learn more about him; maybe befriend him in order to make him share his connections.

I don’t think Captain Grey will hold back when I tell her we’re going to ferry aliens on Terran ships at the behest of our Argon Interloper. Boso calls out as I enter the corridor.
Be careful not to accidentally join his unlawful smuggling operation while transporting him.

On board the Sloth to perform a progress inspection of Takaharu Memorial Station the ship arrives at an appropriate observation area. I access the current build plan. All build materials have been delivered, the Terran Docking Hub is complete and production modules are almost done, leaving just the storage facilities to be constructed. This also checks out with what the cabins observation portal can show me. Satisfied with the process I call Captain Grey to the cabin.

Captain I’ve reached a decision regarding one of the crew. I’ve decided who to assign to Takaharu Station.
Is that why we’re moving?
We’re moving because he needs more management experience and I need another cabin berth. We need to transport someone across the new gate connection.
Has this individual been vetted and approved?
I don’t know what regulation your about to cite but Boso did say not to get involved with his smuggling operations.
The one member that understands the correct use of Terran station protocols, the regulations of the Terran military code, and can recite them as well as myself.
The Boron that can probably give an account of the entire Terran Protection Act. He told you to avoid this guy, and your going to do it anyway!

Nella!
Oh don’t you ‘Nella’ Me, I’m not letting you needlessly place another crew in harms way

Captain Collins when you arrive at the local wharf, Doctor Pioola will be leaving us.

As I walk across the landing pad “I’ll wait for you to…” is the only transmission fragment I hear as my comm link with the Sloth is severed. Once I’ve passed the safety barrier the ship undocks. Leaving me with my thoughts.

Contact Protocols

I take the elevators to the upper levels of the Wharf where the landing pads for the small craftare. The commercial sections of the wharf are centred the fabrication of ships to order and there’s little by way of public comforts like seating except at the dealership showroom. I head there while I examine my property list and request a pickup.

Purchasing a ship here would sidestep the following of Terran protocols since there is no Terran technology that needs to be protected from foreign parties. I’m not sure how the Pioneers have managed to walk that tightrope. I know life was a lot simpler as a planetary bound Xenoarchivist. examine, analyse and record and preserve the foreign artefacts and recordings. Largely independent work considered by some as an opportunistic work like mercenaries and piracy. But it’s important work as history provides answers and perspective for all generations. So while using non-Terran craft will avoid Captain Grey’s interpretation protocol wrath I think diversifying fleet composition is in order.

The Geometric Owl arrives at the wharf and after several hours I am introducing myself to Dal’s Split contact offering the Owl as personal transport. We board and I’m wishing for a few bottles of space fuel after hearing the life, family and cultural history of this suspicious individual. Shortly after flying though the Jumpgate at Profit Centre Alpha into the reconnected territory.

This is sector security, Split scan now. What you have?

Have I not warned my assistant to not become and accomplice in an unlawful conveyance of goods? Boso fretted
It’s rather odd to come across Patriarchy Police in this sector. Wait! Let your passenger deal with this. Dal replied

It's a rather odd suggestion and probably goes against some protocol but I've got no other idea that doesn't put us at further risk.

This is Fau’t nNt reporting on behalf of scanned vessel
Captain, this one has some dangerous opinions, No imminent danger though

After a few minutes we are cleared to continue.

Once we are clear of the patrol vessel the Split passenger tells me
Since you showed interest in Split culture, have friend who might talk some sense into you. That reckless Split always find trouble. Send you her contact details.

That was unexpected commented Dal privately.

Looks like our suspect was scouting newcomers for the Zyarth authorities. Connections to Zyarth Patriarchy won’t get us anywhere. The contact he provided, however, definitely belongs to Free Families. I have a possible location for her but she won’t be that easy to actually get hold of. Recently there have been a number of slaves who have escaped their former masters. This isn’t the first instance of slave resistance since the gate opened. News of a strong Argon Federation elsewhere has inspired them with some hope. Doing her a favour might earn us the friend we need.

Be aware that the Patriarchy Police are also looking for this ship.

A Good Deed

After locating a vessel similar to the target description. Boso informs me

This vessel fits the type but I’m not sure it is indeed the correct one, This one appears to have been abandoned. How strange. You should try to gain entry to it so that we can extract from the ships internal logs.

Wasn’t Boso earlier concerned about getting involved with illegal activities? Here I am entering an abandoned ship for information gathering. The original owners might not like the finer points of salvage and ownership if they want the ship back.
Making my way to the Cockpit to query the ship logs I see a long rack of space suits and a number of empty hooks. Accessing the ship logs for Boso he summarises them as

Oh deary me no. Apparently this vessel was stopped and its crew taken, during the invasion by the Patriarchy. This must all have happened before the Gates were reconnected. This is clearly the wrong ship.

Dal interjects I have a lot of bulk data but can’t pinpoint a possible location for our fugitives sending it over. This sort of data should make your senses tingle Boso. You can track them down, with Bosos help, so we can negotiate the hostages release.

How exciting Dal has provided a considerable number of sensor data logs from ships that have traversed Free Families sectors on their trade routes. Analysing the logs and cross referencing them with cargo records. I was able to identify several vessels worthy of further investigation. I will mark their positions on the map for you.

I start the engine and make my way towards the local Defence Platform.
I receive a transmission from the Defence Station

Approaching vessel Pleassse Identify
This is Pioola pilot of the vessel RDX-351
This is Teladi Defence Platform VAO-238 Sector Two Grand Pilot Pleassse Clarify, Intenionsss, or suffer Ministerial Summary Ruling.
My intention is to dock, I am a registered Guild member.
You loossse profits, Pilot stop all engines and await Ministerial Conformation.

I bring the vessel to a complete stop. Dals comment about the Patriarchy Patrol makes a lot more sense now. The station is offering some Guild Jobs and by contacting the guildsman it’s a lot simpler getting the contracts assigned than it is to receive the usual temporary docking permit. The payment for completion of the contracts will be some paint jobs. The tasks were hardly any trouble a rescue from a mine field and satellite repair. The Teladi don’t seem to like the Patriarchy Policing their sector as the destroy the Patrol Vessel in short order.

Heading back to the Cobra I begin making plans. As I haven’t heard back from the Defence Platform the plan is to transfer a skeleton crew from the Porcupine to operate the Cobra. Then once there are fresh recruits on Porcupine both the Porcupine and the Sloth will provide the Cobra with an escort.

Skeleton Crew

The Porcupine arrives and sends over an adequate crew to operate the new ship before heading off to the nearest equipment dock to employ more crew members. I tell the skeleton crew to get the ship operational and to explore the sector before moving to a rendezvous point to await an escort.

Our search for the hijacked ship begins with exploring the vastness of the newly connected sectors. I’m glad I have the Sloth and the Porcupine defending the Cobra as despite the relative safety provided by a couple of Defence Stations and sector patrols we are targeted be a small Xenon raiding party. The skeleton crew have got the ship in working order as the ships Turrets begin opening fire once the shields deflect an energy strike. The escorts quickly engage and overwhelm the raiding party.

We continue our search and after a rocky detour Boso indicates
This vessel seems to fit the description provided by Dal rather well. Maybe you could try asking the pilot whether they recently escaped slavery aboard a Split station

I take the Geometric Owl, undock from the Cobra and approach the vessel. I’m just thinking how likely is that Bosos open approach is going to work. Dal makes a suggestion that is just to open basic comms with the vessel. I don’t need to open a channel with the vessel as they soon broadcast a warning.

This is your first and only warning. Do not approach any closer or we will open fire.

I ease off the throttle and Boso and Dal confer

They don’t seem very welcoming.
He’s carrying quite a weight on his shoulders with those other fugitives on board, we’ll have to persuade him if we want to get our hostage.
Is that really necessary?
They only need to think that you’re willing to kill. Oh and try not to damage the crew quarters.

So I get a fix on the vessel and increase the throttle to engagement speed. The hijacked vessel is a Cobra so I line up aft with it’s single engine and fly in and then open fire with the lasers. After several volleys with the lasers I decide to pop up above the level of the landing pad. I’m about to let loose another volley of laser fire when the shields register a heavy impact. Well that warning wasn’t just bluff and bravado the hijacked ship really is armed. Another shot impacts the shield. Time to move out of range. A third hit to the shield. I try to vary my flight and a fourth shot jolts the ship. My shielding has shut down the capacitors completely discharged.

I’m out of range and the shielding system charges the capacitors ready for another go. With the crew on alert I’m unable to get in a good position for long and after a few aborted attempts I decide to order my own Cobra to Attack since the hijack crew are focused on the little Owl. I see my Cobra come in and fire everything at the Hijack Cobra and a few moments later They’re broadcasting a cease fire.

Cease Fire! We’re ready to negotiate! We’re willing to give up the hostage! Dock on our ship to pick her up.

Once the hostage is transferred onboard the Owl is contacted directly by another party.
Slave Trader 3 calling foreign vessel Foreign vessel will release Split hostage immediately

I turn to the former hostage who looks exhausted. Split want to go home, Please Comply.
As I begin going through the undocking protocols so I can return the former hostage Dal notes that the timing of that was rather suspicious.

Ceremonies

I slowly approach a massive vessel and receive docking permission from Slave Trader 3 Flight Control. Touching down at the designated pad the rescued Split leaves once the landing struts are locked and the cabin latches are released.

I decide to visit the captain to make sure there are no further misunderstandings.
I ask Manda to perform a preliminary diagnostic on the Owl after the tussle with the fugitives.

Finding the commander of this vessel on the bridge.

Hello There
Creature is welcomed aboard Slave Trader 3. Split not fond of outsiders meddling with Split matters. Fugitives have been under surveillance. Contact has been made to to negotiate hostages freedom. Hostage situation was under control.
This creatures reckless behaviour endangered a Split life nonetheless, this creature did try to rescue one of ours.
So pilot can make amends by attending funeral of Split war hero.
Pilot meet our ship at accelerator in Heart of Acrimony. Pilot also bring customary gift of caviar.

I return to the landing dock, board the Owl and am about to receive the damage assessment from Manda when Dal calls.

OK I’ve found some more data about her…
Dal whatever details you’re about to summarise go a put it in a report for me.
Very well then.

Manda delivers the damage assessment indicating the airlock doors are stuck and there are pressure and electrical problems in the crew compartments. Flying back to the Cobra I instruct Manda to manage repairs, maybe even ask the deck crew for assistance.

I head over to the Sloth and return to Grand Exchange to learn about caviar.
Returning to my Personal office and prepare myself an iced water and spice concoction. After staring out at the central asteroid having finished the drink I wonder why Dal hasn’t pestered me about anything. Taking the seat at the desk I notice on the console the report from Dal.

I execute a search query for ‘caviar’ before opening the report from Dal

Name: Lae t’Shn Species: Split
Gender: Female

Role: Advisor SPL/CULTURE#REF <CURB>

SPL/CULTURE#DEF+?CURB

A female adviser to male Split decision makers.
Curbs were originally established by Patriarch Ghus t’Alt tempering the worst excesses of male Split enthusiasm.

Lae t’Shn belongs to Tkr t’Znk, a minor patriarch who trades in Argon slaves with the Zyarth Patriarchy. She was probably there to clean up on the fugitive property mess, which caused a significant loss of face for her male counterpart.
Not that Family Tkr has much reputation to lose these days.

– Dal

[AoW]

Closing the report and leaning back the search result for caviar.
Recipes for Cultural delicacy spacefly caviar “25 eggs of Markus Spacefly”

Making sure things are running smoothly I retrieve and prepare the expected gift of caviar and head back to the Sloth and towards the Split ceremony

No Help

The Sloth has rejoined to it’s escort role and I’m back aboard the Cobra which I’ve named Bone Naga in my own ceremony in honour of the good work of the skeleton crew that have performed marvellously particularly the captain Meli Barnard, the talkative navigator Gogoeolos Rungissas Ugurras IX and whoever was operating as the deck crew, as Manda was impressed with the repairs they managed to the Geometric Owl.
Having concluded my own impromptu ceremony It’s time to head for the Split funeral service.

I hand over the guest gift of caviar.

Split accept offering. Guest may interact with others. Ceremony starts soon.

I guess that means I have the opportunity to engage in some small-talk. Tau t’Fnt walks over

Split heard you tracked down rebels and released hostage. That reckless Split always find trouble. You track them down quick. Split have request for you. Might improve your reputation here.
Ok I’m listening
Local Patriarch Noa t’Hlp faces justice at the Hall of Judgement. Accusation is withholding reparations for Zyarth Partiarchy. He says he is not wealthy enough for such demands. Says his financial records were stolen.
Former business partners give evidence, showing many slaves bought from him. Punishment should not be applied without proper investigation, but other Split not willing to take a stand. As outsider maybe you help with investigation?

Dal sounds eager and Tau t’Fnt is expecting a response

Agreed
Very well Split wait for information to support release of Patriarch.

The Funeral service is observed and afterwards in the Tactical Briefing Room on the Bone Naga, in conversation with Dal and Boso.
Dal is going over the situation of the Patriarch.

He declared his own financial records are stolen, and I don’t see any way for us to locate those. But we can review the claims of his business partners. The trading station ought to have the records of those transactions but I’ll need Bosos help to access those.
Boso says he has located a potential signal leak to double-check the former business partner’s claims.

Sending the fleet to the Trading station we successfully probe the data leak for the transactional records.

A further conference once we're underway

So the slave traders claim to have bought slaves from the executed Patriarch, which is sort of true. But the Patriarch didn’t see any of the money they paid. Instead all of the money went to the funeral service.
With the financial records from the court case, we hold some pretty damning evidence about the conspiracy. We need to get back to that accelerator and find out what they’re hiding on the other side.

Despite the revolution that is the improving technology of teleportation I am surprised when Dal contacts me saying he’s made his way to the funeral ship and will meet me there. I guess it’s not just an advantage for me but anyone that Boso trusts.
Stepping from the landing pad I see Dal waiting with the Split. When Dal sees me he motions me to talk with the Split.

You too late. You fail. Patriarch Noa t’Hlp executed. No justice for him. Split should have hired better investigator.

Goodness Gracious Me!

As I regain conciseness the confines of the narrow bunk drift into my awareness and when I sit up a soreness around the ribs and a throbbing head immediately ask for my attention. I’m able to stop myself from retching and in a few minutes I am settled enough to recall Dal Bustas’ latest and greatest pea-brained idea that has placed me in this holding cell somewhere

That was a non-ideal outcome although If I paid more attention to his initial assessment I should have recognised the Patriachs’ situation as a lost cause. Dal was there to tell me as much and to keep me focused on a plan he was improvising on the spot.

What can I do? I asked him.
We need to get on the inside, literally!. I’ll concentrate on distracting the funeral attendees Boso will help you break into that coffin ship and Off you go through the Accelerator!

That’s all that I can remember. I get up, stretch and pace the length of the cell a few times. Lae’t Shn enters and I’m about to ask what is going on when she barks

Captured creature will explain presence?
I’m startled by the sharp tone of the question but answer quickly
I was looking into a court case.
Prisoner will explain affiliation to dead Patriarch!
It was a request by Tau’t Fnt
Prisoner will explain affiliation with Family Nhut!

Whatever I said seems an acceptable answer

Another victim of Zyarth oppression, how did prisoner know to come here?
I traced to funeral service I answer.
Anxiously Lae’t Shn asks Where?
At the trading station, but I deleted them.
Impressive work, very well guest seems more curious than hostile.

When Lae’t Shn leaves the cells barrier is removed.

Dal chimes in as it seems he’s always listening along with Boso
Well that went rather well. They aren’t allowing you to leave yet, but being promoted from creature to guest is a good sign.
Indeed, well done, creature -Er, I mean assistant comments Boso
Dal continues

We’ll need to discuss which side we’re on, but for now at least act like you want to join their cause in order to regain your freedom.

I step out of the cell and then take two steps into the corridor.
The individual on duty makes no move to stop me.
When the door closes and I’m left in the corridor I suddenly wonder about any protocols I should be aware of. Walking down the corridor, passing more holding cells and make it safely to the transport system. I eventually arrive at a large audience chamber so whatever vessel I’m on must be huge.

Crossing a causeway I make my way to the centre of the chamber. The chamber is deserted aside from Lae’t Shn

May I ask some questions?
Very Well
Why did you frame the Patriarch?
We eliminate criminals. Loyalists who welcome Patriarch have no place here.
The separatist Patriarchs are uniting? I ask with some surprise
Separatist families are still uniting againt Patriarchy Oppression.
I want to join your cause.
Guest shall prove worth and dedication.
How do I prove my worth
Monetarily.
When no further information is forthcoming I ask How do I prove my dedication.
Rise against Patriarchy and fight oppression. Guest granted access here to return with report.

I’m on the causeway moving towards the door when Dal bursts onto the private comm channel full of excitement.

We found the hideout of a Free Families Separatist movement! Knowing that Patriarch Tkr is involved I will try to identify his allies in this undertaking.

Well I do have a contact working for the Patriarchy Police. If you’re interested in warning them about the building rebellion, I think I can arrange a meeting. With the funeral records from the court case we hold some pretty damning evidence about this conspiracy.

Meet me on the Funeral Service Ship if you want me to a meeting with the Patriarchy Police. If you’re not interested there is probably some benefit to be gained from working our way up within the rebellion to get a sense of it’s scope.

That’s something to think about while I try to find a way off this vessel.

Privileged Guest

I make it back to the transporter and find I have access to may areas of the ship including the bridge. I eventually arrive at the flight deck. There are multiple bays and I think about calling in one of my own ships to pick me up when I notice what may be the coffin ship. I go an walk around the ship. It looks like the Coffin ship but rather than civilian registration markings on it there is now two triangles with four stars.

It looks familiar but it seems out of place. I head into the ship and near an internal ladder leading to the cockpit there are a few smears of red blood. I touch the back of my head which still throbs and an feel a lump. I think I must have startled Yul t’knk when I boarded and was obviously incapacitated to eventually rouse in the cell earlier.

I climb into the cockpit and prepare to launch. As the ship lifts from the docking pad

Flight control to guest vessel, state reason for mission.
Control this ZYP-027 for dedication trial purposes.
Vessel is clear to fly, Fight with honour.

I eventually locate a Patriarchy policing craft and enable the ships weapon systems and unleash a full barrage of fire that is completely absorbs by the shields of the Patriarch Cobra. I unleash a second barrage with the same result and when we are fully engaged in combat I make the assessment that I’m out matched in this situation. Not wishing to be riding in my own coffin, while avoiding fire I tune the comm system to fleet frequencies.

Requesting Immediate Backup
Bone Naga responding to friendly IFF, ETA minutes away

I continue to keep the focus of the Police Craft and a few minutes later the Bone Naga arrives, ambushes and overwhelms the Patriarch vessel with a sufficient offensive barrage.

I land my latest vessel at the Bone Naga and then organise transport on the Geometric Owl.
Returning to Lae’t Shn I give am honourable report on the actions against the Patriarchy.
And after offering a symbolic sum of 1 million credits to the cause.

Novice Guest is Dedicated and Worthy.
Novice will meet Slave Trader Much Work to be done.

Pirates are Vultures

I return to the Geometric Owl and prepare to depart. Receiving a brief message to Report to Slave Trader 2 for first mission towards Split Freedom.

Split welcome rookie aboard! Split need you outside for minor maintenance. Take bombs and bomb launcher too.
What minor maintenance requires bombs.
You go in spacesuit and fly to mass traffic dock in front of Slave Trader 2. Get in spacesuit Rookie.

As I work through the process of preparing for an EVA for what feels like the one hundredth time, I’m loading the spacesuit bombs and connecting the launcher to the EVA chair when I get a message on the company channel. It’s Captain Barnard of the Bone Naga.

Apologies Ma’am for interrupting just though you’d like to know we rescued all crew members of vulture (GGX-106) The captain has a novel idea of wanting revenge.
Briefly, what happened.
The captain sent out a distress call once they were requested to drop all cargo. We responded but could only recover the life pods. No sign of pirates.
I’ll organise a replacement and send further instructions.
Bone Naga resuming duties.

I’m positioned in the EVA chair, the airlock completes cycling and space once again welcomes my tiny self. Once in position I activate the bomb launcher, select the spacesuit bomb clip and proceed to launch bombs at cargo drones. Once the bombs attach the drones fly back to Slave Trader 2.

Once I’m back on board I spend a few minutes to establish a remote connection with the Trade Guild and accept some ship procurement missions for some Vulture Vanguards since I need to replace one of my own. However I cannot establish a remote connection with the Teladi wharf. Some investigation might be required, but I’ll have to do that later

I tell Yu‘t Knk that I’m ready and she proceeds to outline the next phase of the Operation
When docked, you meet person inside for more instructions. Contact will expect you deliver bombs. When cargo drones allowed into station they make distraction, Then you do job.

Concise if vague, The station contact will give further directions which I guess I’ll carry out at the time of greatest confusion.

This is all rather conspiratorial. They still didn’t tell us what this is about, though we’ll know soon enough I suppose. You’re probably going to steal something.

Dal tells me excitedly whenever he encounters an opportunity for chaos.
Why Do I feel like the instrument that encounters the chaos.

Rescuing a Plan

Once the Split finish docking this gargantuan sized ship, that handles like a small elephant at the designated pier. I debark to the station and begin searching for my contact. I eventually find the contact in a low security control room.I’m told to find a crate with access codes to a secure part of the station to rescue imprisoned Split. While on my search for the crate Boso expresses relief in performing a noble cause! and now feels much more comfortable with our involvement in the plot. While Dal thinks he might have underestimated the scope of the undertaking.

I’m glad they’re comfortable with their involvement in this, Their safety and well being is secure, without having to prove their worth to the cause.
I eventually find the crate with the access codes and as I make my way to the secure location.

I release the captive Split and then the rigged cargo drones are detonated within the station and in the resulting chaos we make our escape. I am running behind the two former captives as we make our way to the landing pads. There’s a ship on one of the pads and we intend to use it to make our escape. The cockpit is unoccupied and the two running mates search the other areas of the ship. Our Argon conspirator disables any lockout protocols from the control room. I rapidly lift off the pad and begin moving away from the station. I’m hearing a lot of confused of radio chatter as apparently there is an uprising for control of the station.

We’re safely away when I hear an open broadcast.

Patriarchy Police calling terrorists! Surrender now, should have run when Split warned you.

I check the ships gravidar and there are a few medium sized ships and some fighter but they currently seem to be focused on either the station or on Slave Trader 2, they haven’t noticed us. I hear a few requests for help from Slave Trader 2 to help defeat the fighters.

I check the ships weapon systems and it seems similarly configured to the Geometric Owl with multiple burst rays and auto cannons instead of lasers. Which is at least better than the Coffin ship I was flying earlier. I recheck the gravidar and pick an isolated fighter and ambush them, defeating them relatively quickly. It’s a tactic that works repeatedly as I deal with a few more fighters.

Eventually the threats to Slave Trader 2 and the Station are gone and while I’m en route to a Slave Trader docking bay Dal congratulates my success.

Now to go back to their lair. Now that we’re tried and tested field operators, they might loosen up a bit about their separatist movement. Ask her when you can speak to their leaders.
They’re quite elusive and I’m having a hard time finding which of the local Patriarchs are involved.

Later while standing at the landing pad control console I’m checking over the summary information of my latest ship. I feel Slave Trader 2 set a heading for Heart of Acrimony Dals ‘separatist lair’. My two former passengers seem to be making a maintenance inspection of the fighter, which the Split refer to as a Chimera. I’m thinking about what Dal told me a short while ago and I have my own idea why he might be struggling to find answers. I now have two pressing questions to answer, Dals or the mystery of the missing Teladi Wharf.

I can either head to the crew communal area, waiting till Slave Trader 2 arrives and get an answer for Dal and possibly asked to do another urgent and dangerous task or I find the answer to the missing Teladi wharf.

Ship Breaker

I take a few deep breaths and some stretches before turning a round and boarding the Chimera. The split hurriedly stow the maintenance equipment before climbing the ladder and heading for the rear of the ship.

I take off and once away from Slave Trader 2 set a heading for the sector Two Grand. Once there I ask a fellow pilot for direction to the nearest wharf and they helpfully suggests the sectors northern gate. I eventually locate the Wharf but it belongs to the Argon of Guiding Star.

I walk to the local ship dealership.

Hello there, can I interest you in a new ship?
Uh.. No thank you.
Well welcome to the Guiding Star Wharf. Originally settled to possibly combat your Terran Navy. We have become self reliant, able to defend our sector. We have even held off various Split Families that have tried to claim the sector during the Shutdown.
Have you had many new visitors since the Gates started reconnecting?
A few, mostly locals though, the occasional trader from Impulsive Venerable Konglomerate from Argon Prime. Speaking of which they were supposed to be delivering a consignment of engine parts from the Open Market a fortnight ago.
Anything I can do.
No, probably not. Anyway thanks for the chat

I’m not sure why I went and saw the ship dealer when I realised this was not a Teladi Company Wharf. It sounds concerning that a trade shipment has been noticeably delayed and not been filled by the Teladi Company or Trade Guild given their proximity to Guiding Star. I’m passing by a factory in Two Grand when I get a proximity warning. I am not dangerously close to the station so a quick glance/study of the gravidar display and there’s a large blip that the computer is identifying as a Xenon destroyer.

It’s a large ship and is making an approach towards the station. There is not a lot of infrastructure in the sector so I decide to slow it down before the station is in direct danger. I approach the large Xenon vessel which does not match any account of the Xenon from the Terraformer Conflict that occurred in the past in my own sector of Brennan’s Triumph. Rather this large Xenon vessel is taller and rounder and no external indication of decks. The Chimera is too fast and agile for the bigger cannons to get a good track on me and I’m soon hugging the curved hull, lining up my rays to target one of the engines and a few moments later the engine ruptures and dies. I skim over the top of the Xenon and cause the second engine to explode in the same manner.

With the Xenon immobile, I now buzz around the hull destroying turret systems both large and small as well as component shielding. With the Xenon now effectively disarmed and immobile I target the main shield generator. It explodes and arcs out but there must be internal shield capacitors as there are still readings to indicate that the Xenon is still shielded. I switch over to the auto cannons and after continuous bursts with periods to let the guns dump their heat load I am reading a small decline in the shielding level. However not enough to suggest I’ll crush this machine myself. I’ve effectively saved the station under threat but there has been no response from the Teladi either a sector patrol or an armed response. I call in my own forces and by the time they arrive and begin their attack I’ve reduced the residual shielding to half.

I decide to fly north to the defence station to report my encounter, halfway there the computer alerts of another threat. A check of the gravidar shows another large blip. Only problem is it’s larger than before. It’s 20-30 kilometres away, heading towards the station we just saved. That is until it isn’t and slowly tracks towards me. The computer is having a hard time identifying it but it indicates it’s longer and wider than the destroyer. Wanting to continue to the defence station to make my report and warn them. I resume heading north at max throttle of all three engines. I position the stationbetween myself and the Machine and look back, that Xenon is still coming. I don’t want to stick around or risk my small fleet so open a comm channel to the station. I tell tell them that I dealt with a destroyer and that there is a large unknown Xenon threat approaching.

This is Teladi Defence Platform VAO-238 Sector Two Grand Pilot Pleassse Clarify.

I drop my head and close the link. It sounds like the same communication officer from earlier, all about the right form and correct change only.
I’ll leave the Teladi to their profitable exchange with the machine, I’ve done all I can.

Alliances

I fly though the gate entering Profit Center Alpha and switch over to the fleet channel asking everyone to check in.

Fleet Leader, Meli Barnard,Bone Naga, Checking in
Bela Grey, Sloth, Checking in
Manda Gisler, Geometric Owl, Checking In
Hoealeos, Porcupine, Checking in

With everyone accounted for, having sent Foologos ahead earlier to try locating a Teladi Company Wharf. I land on the Bone Naga, have the fleet head south of Profit Center Alpha and request a debrief about the Xenon Encounter.

Entering the captains ready room Meli is waiting along with projections of the other ship captains in the cross fleet communication.

Okay everyone give me your assessment of the Xenon destroyer.
Fairly straightforward
Easssy Profittsss

What do you mean Profits?
Guild Bounty for Profit Protection, Large ship, large Reward
It was basically a hulk when we got there, damaged and inert, cause of the commander.

Alright, Alright, Everybody I’ll give each of you a bounty. No need to worry who earned it.
Anything else about the Xenon?

No Ma’ am just standard station threatening siege machines. The Argon Factions have encountered those from time to time.

I show The preliminary information of the other Xenon that I observed and noone can provide anything useful other than a general agreement at it does appear to be of Xenon design.
I spend a few minutes in the ready room transferring 800,000 in bounties.

825-2-12 22:00 News Flash

Xenon Incursion into Profit Center Alpha

Earlier today Xenon forced an incursion into Profit Center Alpha. This incident occurred with little warning and did not follow previous patterns of raiding parties but a single large Xenon. It is rumoured that the sector Two Grand had been lost hours earlier to the machines. Although that status has yet to be confirmed

Contact with the Teladi Defence Platform was lost and has not been reestablished at this time. Teladi Company CEO has made requests to the Ministry of Finance for immediate emergency relief and has open contracts for interested parties in mitigating the financial losses of Two Grand

Gyssyndrues Mudymos Ynaquas I Military Affairs Corespondent.

Ship location Trinity Sanctum Three. Setting course for Paranid Wharf
Belay that course, new destination Trinity Sanctum Shipyard.
Navigation! We have new orders.
New destination helmsman Trinity Sanctum Shipyard.
Setting new heading captain, desstination confirmed.

The news broadcast it troubling, I’ll go talk to the faction representative and see if they can assist the Teladi.

The invitation got me brief audience with the representative but only enough time to formally recognise slightly better standing than the average citizen with access to basic military equipment. No significant political sway, but they did say that organisations throughout the empire may decide to approach me now.

The Paranid wharf wasn’t my initial destination, If it wasn’t for Foologos scouting mission I would not have realised there was a second wharf in the system. We arrive at this other wharf and after purchasing some freighters to replace those lost and some that will satisfy the Trade Guild.

The ship dealer indicates that this Paranid designed wharf actually belongs to the independent faction Alliance of the Word. The hand me a small near circular disc that looks to be made from glass. With a request to participate in a short survey to rate their performance. All surveys are to be carried out in person with Almanckuttall the factional representative of Alliance of the Word. I am eventually ushered into Almanckuttalls Office. He glances at me and after a few moments of gazing I step forward and place the glass disc on the desk before taking two steps back. Almanckuttall stares at the disc handling it like a sacred object as he rotates it on the desk in front of him. He then places it under the desklamp and then gazes at it once again. He then flexes his fingers and straightens.

Greetings Doctor Pioola, We have been observing your activities for some time. We are honoured that you have approached our organisation voluntarily.
Our purpose during the Shutdown was to preserve the culture and histories of the residents to the gate network. Our current goal is to understand the gates themselves and would appreciate the help of the foremost minds.

Oh You want to talk to the Boron, well he’s listening you know.

Raising his hand my utterance of Boso catches in my throat Almanckuttall continues
Really young Terran you claim novice in your encounters before the Holy Fires. The light of your path is your own. Now all are welcome to our rescued knowledge to protect against the Flames.
This token is yours young Terran.

Almanckuttall offers the disc back his palms up.

I take the disc and then respectfully back out of the office trying not to show my embarrassment and mindful not to fall over the plants.

A New Type of Ship

<beep> <beep> <beep> <beep>

The chronological alarm dragged me away from my research sortie
I had lost track of time as I had continued to scour the Histories and Cultural Records gathered by the Alliance of the Word over the last 24 years.

Split

History and Origins

Equally precarious is the historical authenticity of the purported First Patriarch of the Split
Ghus t' Gllt, who, it is told, reunited his scattered and mutually estranged people, discovered the scientific abilities of female Split and introduced the custom of "bridles". It is certain only that these events occurred:

[AoW]

So however suspiciously we consider our first contact with the Split their tales of their first Patriarch might be true or just common folklore.

I started checking cultural accounts after my search of the large xenon vessel observed at Two Grand and assaulting Profit Center Alpha returned scant information aside from a belonging to a potentially newer iteration generally classified as “Branch 9”.
I may need to interrogate other recorded sources. Boarding the Bone Naga I ask to fly to the vicinity of the Segaris Station. As I’ve had a request from Ako Song for a meeting. Once the Naga arrives I fly down to the station and make my way to the managers office.

Hello there Ma’am,
Hello Miss Song, Any reason you requested this meeting? You’ve regularly trasfered profits from the station.
The station basically runs itself. Mind if we take a walk while I outline an ideas for expanding the station?

Grabing up the tablet from her desk Ako Song heads for the door.
This way Ma’am
As she turns away from the lifts and heads along other access ways. After a few strides.
We heard about the Xenon at Profit Center, and Bela debriefed about the encounter at Two Grand.
You talked to Captain Grey.
Of course Ma’ am, she stopped over on her way to Segaris and gave details the network broadcast left out. What you did was brave and smart.
So… the station...?
Miss Song hands over the tablet showing the station blueprints
Right we thought adding a habitation ring, some extra storage and a pier would improve things considerably.
I scan the blueprints and hand over the tablet.
The draft looks fine, I’ll get them finalised and organise for the materials.
I probably should get going.

I have one other item on this meetings agenda
Ako says as se leads me down normally restricted areas of the station back to the landing pads.

A high pitched squeal is heard from the trading corner and a few moments later someone runs off the travelator colliding into Ako

Are you alright Miss Armstrong?
I am Miss Song.
You didn’t give all your money over to Horasuimas did you?
What that lizard has a name! No Ma’am I didn’t.

Miss Armstrong!
Whaaat….Woah.
Apologies Ma’am.
Miss Armstrong, This is Doctor Pioola.
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh. Is it time Miss Song,
It is, Head on over.

Ako and I follow behind to one of the empty small landing pads.

What’s Going On?
We organised a small surprise
We..?
Bela, Myself, Miss Barnard, Miss Gisler, even your friend Hoealeos. Although she was not happy about parting with her credits.
Now Miss Armstrong.

Working the terminal, warning klaxons sound and the pad splits open as something is recalled from the depths of the station. What emerges is a sleek Terran vessel. The young lady starts jumping up and down shouting Do you like it!
Ako leans in So what do you think of your very own, brand new ship?

I walk over to the ship and pace down the nose to the entry ladder. Climb aboard and start the process with the station redundancy interaction system to obtain flight clearance.
I perform a tight turn to correct a less then ideal approach to the nearby accelerator.

Iiieee
I open the throttle and am impressed with the acceleration and the absolute silence of the Terran engines. Swivelling the pilot chair I see Miss Armstrong picking herself up off the floor.

Ugh I think the dampeners might need a tweak.
Why are you here Miss Armstrong?
I’m the ships engineer, and wanted to hear your opinion of the ship after a shakedown.
Well did you bring your toolkit?
It’s back on the station, we are heading back there after this little jaunt.
Well I’m going to see the Ministry Representative and then I’ve got to visit the Argon and then a few tasks at Antigone Memorial.
Oh that’s almost home and 2,000 kilometres away.
Well I know I’ll enjoy the solitude.
It’s a good thing we’re provisioned with ready to eat meals.
If it’s all right with you Ma’am I’ll go analyse the engineering diagnostics.

What I didn’t tell Miss Armstrong is that we’re heading to Profit Center Alpha as that’s where the representative for the Ministry of Finance is at the Equipment Dock. I’m going to pick up something at Silent Witness so it’s not a financially wasted trip. I take a short extra detour near the Silent Witness Gate of Eighteen Billion to repair some station data leaks and to test out the airlock.
Every peg has a suit and every suit has the registration number of the ship and the name Pioola. This certainly involved Captain Grey.

Eventually I arrive at the equipment dock and complete the trade. It’s a bit of a wait to see the representative, not because they’re particular about who buys their basic military ships and equipment. It’s just a backlog of applications due to the Ministry’s temporary ceremony suspension because of the Xenon incursion; recently being lifted.

All Promotions Lead

Although there’s no longer an urgency until the next Xenon Incursion, I’m still going to visit the Argon and then head to Antigone Memorial. Riding the highway till Argon Prime should provide copious engineering data for Miss Armstrong to analyse while I’m seeing the Argon representative.

As I’m approaching the wharf to meet the representative I’m tuning the radio towards the interaction system band when I hear what might be a beacon signal but over the station airspace control reserved bands. I have the computer eventually isolate and identify the distinct band and it’s a communication request from an individual wanting to be transported from the station to another in Argon Prime. I accept the job and then proceed to dock and prepare to see the representative.

Just another promotion ceremony but this time the Argon will also allow me access to their shipyard which means Large and well Extra Large craft and some heavy hitting military grade equipment.

What information does the Argon have on the Branch 9 Xenon?
What information we have will be accessible to those assisting in our efforts to combat them. We regularly send a duplication of our findings to Sandwell, for comparative analysis, redundancy and archiving.
Hang on Sandwell in Antigone Memorial.
That’s right. It has always been the way, even before the shutdown.
Why is that?
Well the Antigone Republic didn’t exist before the shutdown and Antigone Memorial was an important and nearby sector of the Argon Federation. So we would regularly send our information to be analysed and archived.

Having finished with the faction representative I find the passenger and tell them I’m ready to go. As we approach the Solitude I notice Miss Armstrong hastily getting out of the pilot seat and make her way over to the entry ladder.
I’m aboard your ship and ready to depart. the passenger tells me as she heads towards the cabins.
Who is she and what is she doing here. What about the protocols? Miss Armstrong whispers.
Responding with a firm but hushed tone She’s a short trip passenger, it will be fine. If you don’t want to analyse any more data you can make sure she stays in the cabin for the trip.

I take the pilot seat and lift off from the pad. Shortly landing at a neighbouring station where our impromptu passenger alights. I then fly to the shipyard to order a capital ship before heading to Second Contact Flashpoint.

While one the highway I take a fix on our navigation beacon near the highway and then set the final destination as Antigone Memorial, following our marked route. The navigation subroutines give an alert to align with each beacon over the route and eventually we arrive at Takaharu Memorial Station Antigone Memorial without incident for a meeting with Duke Collins. This is about the fourth budget estimate instalment that’s been requested and although the inventories are nearly full and I’m starting to suspect where everyone got the funds for my new personal ship. I tell Collins I’ll transfer the estimate amount and assign more ships to the station.

After the meeting I find a quiet corner of the station and query the Sandwell Archives about the Branch 9 Generation of Xenon.

- Xenon Battleship: Branch 9 Designation - [Current Entry]

A vessel larger than the Xenon K [REF# XEN 800-B9/C0] It is armed with multiple graviton cannons. Already the exterior displays defensive improvements, reducing critical tactical vulnerabilities. Size suggests an increasing capability of the Xenon.

Further intel on vessel required.

Current advice for pilots of the Republic or the Argon Federation:

Superior Fleet Engagement Advised.
Stations Targeted advised to evacuate personnel and engage with station defence sub-systems

[REF# XEN800-B9/C2 -C.A]

Before heading to Segaris to purchase a few blueprints.
