I know when to tempt the RNG, and when to just sit down and let it have it's way. And it's back on my side, so I'll jump back in later today.

Chapter 8: Huntin' 'Nid's.

OTAS wants me to follow an Argon Hermes in Akeela's Beacon. Screaming up north in the Amazon, I find my target. Who steps on the throttle, and slams nose first into the gate. Really. I couldn't believe it, but I watched him bounce off. Figuring that watching him go to Company Pride at 38 m/s won't be fun, I prepare to hit the throttle, and blow the mission. No need. As he re-aligns, the Boreas that occasionally patrols Aladna Hill comes through, apparently on it's way back to Legend's Home, and plows my target under without even slowing down.

Failing the Mission drops me 10% rep. I wait for the escort to clear the gate, then call for the Chokaro to come and pick me up. I jump back to Legends home, and decide to repair and sell the Nova while waiting for another mission. It arrives as I'm at 97%, so I finish, send it along with the space weed it came with, to the Federal Argon Shipyard, and climb back aboard the Chokaro. Now I'm on a station defense, for the SPP M, north in Akeela's.

Jumping the Chokaro to the West gate, I splash one bogey right away, and then I'm off in the Amazon, since the sky is full of M5's. 10 Wasp missiles later. (Apparently a Disco Raider can out run those.)

OTAS calls me almost as soon as I'm done, while I'm on my way back to the TM. I dock, jump back and shortly I'm on my way to Light of Heart to get the info on a contract. Idly, I note that OTAS has an awful lot of assassinations for such a young company. Perhaps there are some buried skeletons eh?

Anyway, it's a Pirate Scorpion, guarded by nearly a dozen M5's of various makes. The Chokaro hangs back, and I go in, Riding the Valkyrie. And slinging all 20 Wasp Missiles I'm carrying. I'll have to find a place to pick up some more. Wonderfully useful, but they go fast. And so does the Scorpion. M4's don't do well under a hail of HEPT fire, and he doesn't even flip red on the gravidar before he goes red and yellow in fire.

But for the moment OTAS has nothing for me, and I feel it's time to start my Paranid killing quest. A moment's work with the computer map shows the perfect place to start.

Hatikvah's Faith. Pirate sector, so no fuzz. Paranid to the South, Split to the North, Argon East, and Pirate's west. Sounds like an ideal hunting ground.

And it is. In spite of these, and these.

So the hunting begins. And it's not good at first. The 'Nid's seem to want to go down with their ships more often than not. Finally I find a strategy. I stake out the south gate, and look for ships heading that way. First score I find is a Perseus packing a Freight scanner. It bails, the first one today, and despite my insistence on not flying Paranid ships, claiming it is the only way to get the scanner, so I do, claim the scanner, the Trade Extension Mk2, and the left over Wildfire missile, then wash it from the universe in a green hail. A Paranid Freight Transporter in a Barracuda goes down with his ship, but not before leaving me two presents. a pair of Mk2 drones. Fortunately, HEPT is as capable of dispatching Mk2's as it is Paranid.

Then a Freight Transporter catches my eye. This one flying a Caiman. I hit it and get a surprise. Not only does it bail, but before doing so, it spew's crate upon crate of mass driver ammo into space. Still aboard, it even has a present, three SQUASH mines. I'll have to think of something to do with those. I send the BADLY damaged Caiman (HEPT really makes a mess.) to the Local Massom Mill, and get on with my mission. A Paranid in a Falcon decides to take an honorable way out, and tries to launch a Banshee while being pounded by HEPT. Needless to say, he doesn't survive the experience. I'm glad of the Valkyrie's thick shielding, because I was almost point blank when it went off, and felt nothing but a jolt in the controls. That might have been picking up the HEPT he'd thrown out when he blew up though. :D

Finally, OTAS calls again. I'm suspicious, and snag a defend station mission from the Massom Mill before I go. It turns out to be a lone Discoverer Hauler. It's no match for the Amazon in speed, nor for the Valkyrie in firepower. And the Pilot knows it. He bails the instant HEPT hits his shields. They're still intact, and I celebrate. For all of a tenth of a second. The ship is drifting to a stop. Which is still a pretty good clip for an M5, and I see it's heading for the station.

BANG.

---

(Where it says These, and These will be replaced by links to photo's, but dial-up and uploading don't mix well.

It's a Boron Ray, Split Raptor, Teladi Phoenix and Teladi Shrike on the Gravidar. There was also Cerberus, but it passed right through on it's way to Light of Heart, and I didn't snap a shot.)

Chapter 9: Singed and Stinged.

Yar, I know it not be proper english. But I be a Pirate. Sort of.

Today was a weird, and embarrassing day. First thing, I took a mission from OTAS HQ, but not from my OTAS contact. I was asked to Patrol for Xenon, and told it would be very hard.

I saw one L, it bailed, and was destroyed by HEPT fire already in the air. Then I get accused of not killing it at all. At least I still got some credits.

OTAS called. Defend Medium weapon forge in Aladna Hill. Dock to Chokaro, jump, kill schmucks, cash+OTAS Rep.

So I decide to step over to Hatikvah's Faith for a bit o' Paranid pounding. As you can expect, this is where things started going wrong. Again. First target, Paranid Freight Transporter, not hauling anything this way, but packing two PBE's. And I want them. Attack just as he reaches the gate. He goes hostile and turns on me. We duel, and I succeed in making him bail. Claim ship, eject goodies. Gravidar Contacts. Crap. Back in Eclipse, kill pirates, snag loot from Perseus, destroy Perseus. Nothing on the Gravidar except a Helios.

Definitely not picking on that. Did I mention I only got one of the two PBE's? And that afterwards I rubbed the dust off the weapons panel and saw it said PRG not PBE on the power connector? No, didn't think I had.

So with nothing on the Gravidar except for a big, nasty looking group of pirates, and none of the capital firepower from the other day, I turn for the Chokaro. But as I approach, a Paranid Weapons Dealer pops on the scope. I turn to intercept. Just moments from it, I hear the chirp of a missile warning.

Classic Tunnel Vision. Twist, pick it up, shoot it down. A mosquito? From where.... Oh, man. The Pirate group is right on top of me and too close to run. So I attack. I blow apart one of TWO Falcons in the group, and get BBQ'ed by two Novas with PBG's. Damn does that hurt. And boy do those shield numbers go fast. I turn and burn for the Chokaro. The shields continue to fall because I'm not fast enough. As I close range, the shields die. 3.5km is not nearly as long as it looks, but the Chokaro is fast, and has full shields and the Jumpdrive is already spooling as I turn away.

Safely back in Legends Home, the Com rings. Oh, NOW you have a mission. Assessing the damage, I've lost one shield, but fortunately I have spare and... damn! I lost one of my hard earned HEPT's.

This will not go un-answered. Or, it won't after I have the shipyard repair Valyrie from 79% hull anyway. For now, I run the mission OTAS asks, fetching some shmuck from a Cluster Flak Artillery Forge in Akeela's, and then a delivery mission. Which I'm able to complete through sheer luck of the draw. How did I end up with 16 Disruptors? Haven't the foggiest. Am I glad? Absolutely. I'm now one rank higher with OTAS.

So... do I get some rewards now?

Guess not. Take a Build Mission, wanting a Rimes M Factory. Hey, don't those? They do indeed require Delexian Wheat. Perhaps this will make up for my otherwise awful day?

Probably not. I do manage to flip a slightly over priced Buster, first stripping off it's fighter drones, and 3 PRG's. Now Valkyrie has a little more... What do you MEAN, only in the Turret's?

Deep breath.

Oh? Did I forget something? Oh, right, that Discoverer. It did indeed survive. With 10% hull. It's survived just long enough to be declared unusable scrap at the Light of Heart shipyard. But at least it was a positive cash in flow.

For now, I'm returning to the comfort of my nice, soft water bed in my Chokaro.

Chapter 10: Crystal Clear

So to start, I took a mission from the OTAS station. Run north, snag some luxury goods, and come back. Okay, fine.

As I dock, OTAS calls me for a mission. It's a defend station mission for the Light of Heart Shipyard. I undock, call back the now repaired if less heavily armed Valkyrie, and jump to Light of Heart.

Smacking down M5's in an M3 is a test of patience, but it can be done. From there, I jump back into the Chokaro, and leap to Haktikvah's again. Sliding up and around to a position in the upper left corner, I undock and go out into the trade lanes... Only to discover that I've also, lost my Triplex Scanner. Grumble.

Okay, no problem, I'll find a Paranid and take theirs. This plan does not go quite so well as I hope. Not only do half the ships I attack turn out to be packing fighter drones, but those that do bail, have their scanners destroyed by the time they do.

But, while attacking two of them, the go pirate, just after I decide I don't want what they have. The kicker? Both were masquerading as High-Tech Traders. So neither one leaves me anything special, except a contribution to the next 'Deliver huge quantities of the unbuyable Disruptor missile' missions from OTAS.

Another freighter spills it's guts, and leaves Crystals all over the sector. 138 of them to be precise.

And I decide to make an exception to my rule of simply destroying Paranid ships. What bails is a Demeter Superfreighter, and I wouldn't normally have any qualms about blowing it to shreds, but it still had nearly two thousand units of Magalit aboard, and another 500 units of Soja, and it still had 87% hull. So I decided I'd take the cost of the replacements and repairs for Valkyrie out of the Paranid, by selling this one ship. So I escorted it to the Light of Heart shipyard, and watched the credits roll over in the 6 digits. Then flipped it all into repairing my Caiman, Salvage Bucket. Now to fetch it a jump drive.

One other point of note, the Teladi are back in Haktikvah's. From the area around the north gate, I picked up a Hammerhead Missile, dropped when a group of pirates fell a foul of a Phoenix and Shrike. It was beautiful.

Chapter 11: When to hold 'em

As I make for the gate of Haktikvah's Faith, I run across, and quite nearly into, a Paranid High-Tech trader. Annoyed at the intrusion, I scan it, just for kicks. It's carrying 7 1 GJ shields, 4 200MJ shields, and 22 25MJ shields. Even considering I'm escorting a banged up and unshielded freighter, I cannot resist.

Valkyrie leaps out of the bay and HEPT fire rips into the target. The pilot bails with half the hull gone and I'm terrified my prizes are as well.

I'm in luck however, as five of the seven 1GJ shields are still there, all of the 200's and a dozen of the 25mj shields, including the two the freighter was using. I transport them all to the Chokaro, and then blow the freighter.

Now OTAS calls, and I answer, leaping straight back up to Akeela's, and then to Light of Heart for an assassination. Now back to Haktikvah's for more pirating.

For some reason, I manage to pick up quite a lot of Mass Driver Ammunition. I didn't know the Paranids made that, and they're all on their way north to Split Sectors. Weird. But it's mine now. There's no answer in sight to my quest for a more powerful combat ship, unless I want to try relieving the Argon of one of their versions of the Eclipse, and I don't think I'll manage that. I'm just getting ready to leave, when I spot some crates on the gravidar near the west gate. I'm then supremely glad for my Triplex Scanner, when I see this.

Chapter 12: Slim Pickings

The Pirate Carrack continues to ravage my favorite hunting ground. I've attempted to hunt around it, and it seems possible, but other Pirate forces continue to ingress into the area. I found myself running again, as I attempted to engage a Paranid Freight Transporter. I was forced to knock out a Nova Raider, and then make a break between two PBG weilding Falcons.

With the Carrack moving between the North, and East gates, and a significant group near the West gate, I found there was not option to get out, but to jump clear across Aladna Hill. Fortunately, I the military presence had kept it clear of pirates, and I was able to meet up with the Chokaro, and return to OTAS for more missions.

Another assassination under my belt and I jumped into the Amazon. If I couldn't hunt in Haktikvah's, I'd try Nopileos Memorial. Understanding that there was every chance I would drop right into the middle of that Carrack group, I would need speed to survive. I got lucky however, and the Carrack was off near the north gate. I took advantage of the lull to pick up some of the bailed ships floating there. Three Solano's, and an Express Hauler went on their way to the Light of Heart shipyard for repair.

Salvage Bucket and another Caiman, the Hold are there now, and will have to move, but the Chokaro is on it's way with another Jumpdrive.

The Amazon then turns and screams towards the West gate, ducking fire from the Pirate Busters hanging around. On the far side, I turn and burn north, getting away before any of the pirates here can find me.

The Chokaro has now completed it's run and it's ordered in by the same gate, and comes to me. Of course, there are also pirates following it, so I'm once again thankful for Docking Computers. I launch in Valkyrie and order it out, even as I'm getting torn into.

Then I'm off and blazing HEPT at first the Discoverer that's caught me, and then into and through two Buzzards and the straggling buster. Then I see my prize.

A pair of Pirate Heavies. A Blastclaw and Blastclaw Prototype. But I'm too far away and can only get the Blastclaw to bail. I spin and shred a couple of M4's and an M5, then claim my prize. Which mounts two PBG's and a HEPT. Plus a shield. But it goes north, having precisely zero chance to survive alone. As I move to follow, my gravidar chirps, and another Blastclaw arrives, which also bails. Instead of claiming it, I call the Chokaro, ordering the Amazon and the Buster Hauler that are aboard off. It's a good thing, because as I dock with it, and teleport to the just bailed Blastclaw, an M3 group comes through. I close with the earlier 'Claw, teleport across, dock, and leap out of the system just as PBG's start to lick at the heels of the Chokaro. OTAS has another mission, and I'm thinking I'll take that, but it turns out to be a follow mission, this time an Argon express. Headed for Thuruk's Beard. I don't even get to breach the West gate of Aladna's before I get the Mission failed message.

Now that Carrack is gettin' on me nerves.

I did see one item of interest, coming down from Thuruk's Beard. It was this Albatross, carrying a station. I was wishing for boarders sadly I had to let it go, not having the inclination to tangle with it, or the M7M I'd need to get through the hull. Some day though.

Chapter 13: Dirty Birdie

Since Haktikvah's Faith, though now Carrack free, is still fairly Pirate infested, I decide to work on my various reputations. Return ships, Scan Asteroids.

Even a mission for a Paranid, scanning 'roids which flings my rep back up to Nomad 50%. Just as I'm preparing to end my day at my Silicon Mine, I find a hard Return Ship Mission.

Oh. Yeah. They're totally not getting this back.

Not wanting to risk the wrath of the Argon, my prize and I leap across the universe, and I shepard it safely to the Yaki Shipyard. Since the fuzz will be here soon, I make myself scarce. But first, I lay out some protection money. Yaki are ready, and waiting for the cops, and no paper trail. Now to find another High-Tech Trader to make a ... donation. :D

Probably by 'acquiring' a Carrack. :D Haven't flown one yet, and it's a properly Piratey ship.

Or perhaps a Brigantine.

Or maybe something else fun. Like another Gannet.

Chapter 14: Underplayed, and overpaid.

So... apparently, I over paid for the service of cop elimination. Or the Yaki aren't quite the pilots they told me they were. Checking in on my prize, via a Sat left in the sector, I see two Argon Police Nova Raiders hanging around the station.

And considering that the only fighters I see are well away from there, I might have to go back and demand a refund unless I see some action. But there is an M2 there, so I guess I'll check back later.

The great shield hunt is proving a touch harder than anticipated. In fact, so far I've acquired one of the three, two Gigajoule shields I'll require for my Gannet.

And I bought that, from the Light of Heart Equipment Dock. So it seems that the Paranid have caught on to me, because the number of useful trade convoys has plummeted. I caught one weapons dealer with all three of his eyes closed, and picked up a bunch of SQUASH mines. I should have enough now to deal with any more Capitals I run across.

I hope.

In the mean time, I'm keeping my eyes open for another return ship mission. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to replace my Chokaro. I don't suppose I can convince anyone to lose a Panther eh?

I even make a play for a Blastclaw Prototype that happens to wander in the north gate, but, in a moment of pure insanity, he manages to blow himself up just as I eliminate his shields. *sigh*

Terracorp wants a bunch of expensive missiles, though thankfully no Disruptors. Good because I've picked up a grand total of one.

I guess I need a new hunting ground. Perhaps Split fire will be more friendly to my endeavours. (Or at least full of some wimpier pirate groups.)
