How do I comfortably command my wings in X3 Terran Conflict?

I have reached the mission (I have started the game as the Terran fighter pilot) when I am given 3 AI-controlled rapiers.
But I can't get how to properly control them. Are there any hotkeys (shift + 6 doesn't work - it says I don't have wingman)

I have grouped my ships in one wing, but when I click on an enemy ship in the menu there are only "Autopilot" options. Is there a way to control my ships without going to the "Asset" menu every time I want to command an attack on some particular enemy ship?

Additionally please correct me if I am wrong:
wing - ai controlled ship, that is in my possession.
wingman - ship that has a pilot in it but by mission script is temporary following me? (How do I control them then? only shift + 6?)

If you create a group then open the group's command menu there is a Yes/No line with 'Wingmen for the player' as label.
My game's in french so deal with the mistranslation.
It's under the 'missile probability' and 'please shut up' lines.
That will make the group members take the Maj+5/6 orders.

tbh I never used this before today, and anyway the 3 ships you're talking about will get wrecked by whatever you sic them on.
You can use them to learn how to give orders but they're better landed in OL's shipyard for a quick buck, for you to deal with this mission's xenons and pirates on your own.

If you do opt to sell them for a quick buck, make sure to take the EMPCs off them first. Those are expensive and somewhat hard to come by at that stage in the game. Equip as many as you can to your Sabre for maximum firepower and hold on to the rest for future equipping needs.

A ship set to be a "wingman" will follow you. The "Attack my target" and "Protect me" shortcut orders are given to all wingmen. The main issue with wingmen is that the ship they escort is flown by human; totally unpredictable. IME, it is better to not have wingmen.

One way to give orders to multiple ships is the "Broadcast" system. It has filters, like "All", "Fighters", "Freighters", "Wingmen", and "Drones". Alas, the commands that you can broadcast are limited.

A "Wing" is a group of ships that have been assigned to a "wing". You don't have to go to Asset menu. You can select any member of a wing from map view and give it a command. All members of that wing will get that command.

If I was using wing(s), I did give them some command (e.g. "Attack ..", "Attack nearest ..", "Attack all enemies") and then fly myself around. The wing was a distraction to enemy. I was there to rescue them. Much better than wishing for them to defend me.

I've already forgotten how to create wingman... but, if you assigned some ships as wingman a W should appear on their name.

Rapier is a terrible wingman.. it dies fast and has only one weapon.. wingman ships should be M3 or heavier.

To command wingman use the hockey's (Shift+6 and Shift+7 iirc, tho I don't remember which command this keys activate). Use "wingman attack my target" hotkey to designate a target for them to kill. Once they kill their target, immediately assign another so they don't scatter about to attack the nearest enemy they could find. Use "wingman protect me" hockey to call them back if they are straying too far from you (more than 5km away).

Wingmen should always fight together. They survive better and kill their enemies faster due to this.

BTW - do the current ship's equipment and installed upgrades affect the price?
What is the better way - to sell the ship with equipment, to sell all the equipment on a different station (because as far as I know, you can't sell items on the shipyard).

And is there a way to store items somehow, barring just keeping them in the cargo hold of the ship? Is there some kind of storage room?

Yes, installed stuff does affect the price. However, you get less than you would by selling separately. As for storing stuff, what I usually do is find a used freighter and buy it for cheap. Fix it up with the repair laser and park it in a station where it won't get attacked and use it as my storage locker. I try to go for the larger ones, hauler or superfreighter variants. But any old freighter will do in the early game which I assume you're at. Later, when you get the Unfocused Jump Drive, you can use it to find yourself an Aran, and that will function as an excellent mobile storage depot/hangar.
