[X2] Impossible missions

Post by fig » Thu, 6. Feb 20, 23:07

A few days a ago, I posted a question about Goner ranks in X2. I now think it's impossible to increase your Goner rank beyond Preacher, because there is something in X2 that limits the increase you can get from manaully trading with stations. I seem to remember that only the first transaction counts, or something like that. Trading with the Goner Temple is the only way to gain Goner reputation, so, for all practical purposes, it's impossible to increase your Goner rank beyond Preacher. I couldn't get it to go up by even 1% when I tried.

It got me thinking of a fun poll question, at least for those of you who might be nostalgic for X2. The game has quite a few BBS missions, and a few in-game easter eggs. There are several things that might be possible in principle, but in practice are not. One of the missions in the poll above IS possible. Do you know, or can you guess, which one it is?

Note that this is for the vanilla game only (i.e. I'm not thinking about any mods that make them possible).

I think only one of the missions is actually possible, but I haven't tried everything in the game. Over the years, I have read the forums a lot and I've played the game a lot though, so I'm fairly sure that all but one of these missions is impossible (or doesn't actually exist in the game). I know that one of them is possible, because I've done it :D

P.S. To avoid any ambiguity: 1. Perhaps if you played for a million years, you could perhaps increase your Goner rank to the maxmium but that's too long. 2. Declining when you are asked for another taxi ride does not count as completing the mission. 3. To take over an unknown enemy sector, you have to eliminate all enemy resistance (and keep it that way, OOS)

I'll post a detailed list of what all the missions look like in the game later today, but yes, Fulgrymm, you might be right about the lottery. On the other hand, you might not. I won't give the game away just yet

Capture all types of Xenon ships: you can get N,M,L,K but not the J.
Somehow stop the Xenon shipyard from re-spawning not possible as the SY is loaded by a map, you can destroy Docks and Yards permanently only if they where created by a script.
Enter the Argon rally Not possible as it's mentioned only though a modder could add it.
Land on a planet (or fly into a star) You can burn in the Atmosphere of a planet since btf, stars in Xbtf - X3AP are objects without size or collision they are just a light source.

Life always gets in the way, but slightly belatedly here is the detailed list of the missions:

1. Capture all types of Xenon ships
Xenon fighter ships, despite being machines, do sometimes bail (but I wonder, where do their pilots go!?).
Alternatively, you could dock at the Xenon shipyard and buy any of the ship types. Alas, you can't communicate with it to request docking clearance. But could you hack your way in?

There are no P's or Q's in X2, so the only ships are the fighters, N, M and L, and the two capital ships, the J and the K. J's and K's spawn from the shipyard and also in Xenon taxi and invasion missions. The J's and K's that spawn from the shipyard and the ones that appear in invasions cannot be captured. However, one of the best things about X2 is that they saved the best ship in the game til last:
Spoiler
Show
Once you get to, I think, Ace of Aces 1st grade, you can capture the K's in Xenon taxi missions. The K is as fast and manoeuvrable as a fighter but has PPC weapons that can destroy any target in seconds. They are the perfect ship for assassination missions, and for jumping around the galaxy.

2. Somehow stop the Xenon shipyard from re-spawning
In X2, regular stations don't re-spawn if they are destroyed, but shipyards and trading stations do. So, if you blow up the shipyard, it just returns several game hours later. You'd think there would be something you could do about it? Is there? Maybe, you could sign a peace treaty with the Xenon? They would remove the shipyard from X472, if we give them, oh I don't know, Paranid Prime!? If not, X472 does make for a fun mini game. When the shipyard re-appears, it brings with it all the Xenon capital ships, all at once. That's about 15-25 K's and maybe another 10-15 J's. Once you've got your own K, you can jump in and have fun wiping them out (again).

3. Increase your Goner rank to Protector of the Goners
As I mentioned, I don't think this one can be done. In principle, you could spend all your money buying salvage insurances, but it doesn't look like that works in practice. Perhaps, you could station a large fleet of capital ships around the Goner Temple, and simply imagine that you are a "Protector of the Goners". In a simlar way, there is no PHQ in X2, but if you build an equipment dock, you can pretend it's your PHQ.

4. Win the lottery
In X2, lottery tickets appear quite frequently at space stations. They are relatively cheap and the game keeps track of the number that you've bought and the number of jackpots you've won. It is one of the statistics that is uploaded if you use the Uplink facility to upload a save game. I hope Uplink still works because I still haven't uploaded my game yet!

Lottery tickets in X2 have something like 8 numbers, so the odds of winning are pretty small, and that's assuming winning has actually been programmed into the game. My game says Lottery jackpots won: 0

5. Enter the argon rally
There are lots of varied bulletin board entries in X2. You stop reading them after a while, but they help make the universe more believable. One of the transport missions offered involves delivering components for the Argon rally. The message says that if you deliver the parts in good time, you may have a chance of getting a wildcard entry to the rally. The mission requires a TS, which are my least favourite ship, so I can't even remember ever doing this mission. However, I think you just get the standard "Thanks for making good time" message at the end. I don't think anyone has got anything different, or have they? Have you managed to enter the rally?

6. Find the UFO base
There are UFOs flying from sector to sector in X2. You can follow them, but you can't communicate with them. You can, however, blow them up, and you lose Goner reputation for doing so. Perhaps, that's because nobody knows anything about them and we have never found their homeworld or base. Maybe you could be the first to make contact?

7. Land on a planet (or fly into a star)
You certainly can get very close to planets, but you just bounce off the atmosphere when you get too close. Unlike the original Elite, you can't buy a fuel scoop in X2, and it doesn't look like you get anywhere nearer to stars when you fly towards them. There are 137 sectors in X2 though, so perhaps one of those has a secret planet that you can land on?

8. Complete one of the fast taxi missions.
These missions are fun, and they are one of the most lucrative missions in the game. All you really need is a Pegasus and some good judgement about how fast you can get from A to B.
The mission is to transport someone to deliver documents or to win a bet. The mission challenges you to travel from one station to another, usually one or two sectors away. The first mission is always either one or two sectors away. If the destination is one sector away, you get 6 mizuras to complete it. 11 mizuras, if it is two. If you are successful, you get paid handsomely and are offered the chance to earn even more money by accepting another challenge. Beware though, each new challenge reduces the amount of time allocated to complete it. The distance varies much more too, if the destination is in the same sector, it is very easy. If not, you'll likely need a carrier ship of some kind to jump you to the destination sector. If you keep accepting the challenges, the amount of time drops randomly, eventually down to 3, 2, and then finally to 1 mizura. 2 mizura challenges can be done if the destination station is near a gate. 1 mizura challenges are almost always impossible. Eventually, you just won't make it in time. Unless you're the Doctor and you have a Tardis?

9. Find Susie (or Susie's parents)
I'm not sure how many X games Susie has been in, but she first appeared in X2. Her parents need to pick her up from the Casino, but it seems that they never get that message. Can you find them and reunite Susie with her parents?

10. Take over an unknown enemy sector
Combat in X2 works in mysterious ways. If you are "in sector", the AI is not very clever and capital ships rarely damage each other very much. OOS is quite different, and it has two modes of operation. 1. If you are watching a remote sector, each round of combat takes place every five seconds or so. Hits do a reasonable amount of random damage. When ships first encounter each other, the fastest ship gets first shot. This is often enough to determine the winner, but sometimes the dice rolls can go against you, so it's wise to save your game before doing assassination missions OOS. 2. If you are not watching the sector, each round of movement and combat is a "big round", and happens every thirty seconds or so. This means that capital ships can, and do, one shot kill each other. A group of M6s can kill an M2 in this way too. Finally, there is one more thing to bear in mind: a hostile spawning ship always gets the first shot.

The last point is important because the Khaak constantly spawn in the unknown enemy sectors. In principle, this means that you can't hold an unknown enemy sector because you'd always be losing ships when Khaak destroyers and carriers spawn on top of them. I have to say that this is only my theory though, I haven't tried it out in practice. I do know that it is possible to hold the middle of an unknown enemy sector, because the Khaak only spawn around the edges. I think I might try to see if I can actually do this in my game, at least to hold enough of the sector to build a few stations and mines in it. Has anyone else had any luck doing this?

Thank you to the four of you that voted! Based on the votes, it's the fast taxi mission that's possible. I'll go through the missions one by one though...

1. Capture all types of Xenon ships
The fighters bail fairly easily. The Ks from Xenon Taxi missions are stubborn but will bail eventually. There's a whole thread by Ravenlord about how to cap them, although he doesn't mention the way that I do it. All the ships in X2, except for the K and the Pegasus, are far too slow to use as player ships. If it wasn't for the K and the Pegasus I wouldn't still be playing. So, I use my K ('Extreme Measures') with only the forward turrent set to attack (Gunnery crews: Action stations). When the shields are down to about 10-20%, I save the game. If the K doesn't bail when the shields and hull go down, I reload and try again. If you're still here Ravenlord, this is the reload way! So, you can cap the Ks but the one Xenon ship that just won't bail is the J. You can't hack or get on to the shipyard to buy one, and boarding isn't in X2. So, this one is impossible.

2. Somehow stop the Xenon shipyard from re-spawning
I keep killing it in my game, but it keeps coming back. It adds another brilliant element to the game, IMO. While I'm playing, I check X472 every 5-10 minutes or so to see if it has respawned. If it has, I jump in and kill as many of the ships as I can. I have destroyers at the gates in Black Hole Sun and Thyn's Abyss to deal with the ones that get past. I don't think there's any way to stop it from re-spawning. This one is impossible too.

3. Increase your Goner rank to Protector of the Goners
As I''ve said, I think this one is impossible. I will turn on the script editor as some point, to check if you do gain reputation from buying salvage insurance (or perhaps you only get it from jump drives and transporter devices). In any case, I'm counting this one as impossible too.

4. Win the lottery
Judging by all the threads I've read about this over the years, it's impossible. Winning the lottery simply isn't part of the game. I'm still buying tickets though, just in case everyone is wrong. But I'll count this one as impossible too.

5. Enter the argon rally
Again, from what I've read, this is just something that's mentioned in the mission briefing. It isn't part of the game. So, this one is impossible too.

6. Find the UFO base
I haven't tried following the UFOs myself, but I'm led to believe that they just fly from sector to sector, never going anywhere. I don't know if they just disappear or turn around at some point during their travels. This one is impossible too.

7. Land on a planet (or fly into a star)
One other other possibility, that I forgot to mention, is that there is a shuttle to the surface that departs from stations. At least that's what the announcement says. You can't leave your ship to go walking around the station in X2 though, so I'm marking this one as impossible too.

8. Complete one of the fast taxi missions.
I have played these for ages and ages. Some of them become very very lucrative, so it's worth pushing it as much as you can. The amount per trip changes in different ways. In very rare cases, it can start at 2 million credits and each new trip adds another 2 million or so. Most of the time that doesn't happen and the amount per trip stops increasing. In the rare cases where the amount keeps going up, you can get to over 10 million per trip, but by then you've only got 2 or 3 mizuras to get to the destination! When that happens, it can be a lot of fun to risk another one, the stakes are really high! Ok, it's not much of a risk because you can reload, but it is fun to try. I thought that, like many of the other impossible missions, these were impossible missions too. But one day I got a big surprise:
Spoiler
Show
Message from Marissa Giorno:
Sorry to keep you waiting. I don't need a lift after all. I have met some friends in the bar and I'm going to stay and have a drink on my winnings. Thanks again. Bye.
So, the two votes for the fast taxi mission were right. It's not impossible to complete one of the fast taxi missions!

9. Find Susie (or Susie's parents)
Susie has made regular appearances on the forums. She's part of the lore of X now. I don't know if she is in X:Rebirth or X4, but she is in X3. I don't know what part she plays in the later games though. As far as X2 is concerned, the announcements keep coming and she is never re-united with her parents. This one is impossible too.

10. Take over an unknown enemy sector
I am trying to do this now. I've put down a couple of silicon mines in the center of one of the unknown enemy sectors, and I've built a SPP and a crystal fab. I intend to add a cahoona bakery and cattle ranch and make an E-cell loop. There's an ore asteroid close to the center too, so I'll put a mine on that. The next step is to jump some destroyers in and put them on patrol around the mines and see what happens. If it works, I'll start building more mines, one at a time. Each mine will be further away from the center, so eventually I'm going to get to the parts of the sector where the Khaak capital ships re-spawn. Once that happens, I suspect I'm just going to start losing my destroyers and that will be the end of that. But I'll post back here, if I manage to mine the whole sector somehow...

10. Take over an unknown enemy sector
I've made some progress with this. It turns out that the fighters respawn slowly, so you can pretty much clear the sector of them. When they do respawn, they don't really do very much. So, you can pretty much just ignore them! The Khaak capital ships are a different story...

OOS, the Khaak carrier and destroyer are more than a match for the strongest commonwealth ships. However, they also don't do very much! It appears that they find a place in the sector and stay there. Like the Minbari from Babylon 5: if you don't bother them, they won't bother you.

I've managed to claim the south side of one of the unknown enemy sectors, and build about 20 factories and mines there. There are two carriers and three destroyers on the north side, but they are doing absolutely nothing!! I might experiment a bit to see if I can somehow get them to move to the other side of the sector (and stay there peacefully). That way, I can claim the rest of the sector and complete this impossible mission :D

To my huge surprise, I have pretty much done this. I still have a few factories to build to exploit the resources, but I've built mines on all of the silicon and ore asteroids now. Unfortunately, I did lose one of the ore mines to a Khaak destroyer. It was the one with the poorest yield, just 5, so I wasn't too bothered about it. The sector has more ore than silicon, so losing it doesn't really matter.

There is one hostile Khaak destroyer left, but it isn't actively hostile. It seems to be that the only time it kills one of my freighters OOS is when they fly right past it. If that is the case, I should be able to jump in and gently persuade it to move further away from the trade lanes*. If I get everything done, and I can actually have the sector producing goods without ever losing any ships, I'll post a screen shot and some details on how I did it.

* If you get close enough to shoot at one of the Khaak capital ships, and then fly away, they will follow you. You can then lead them to another location and jump out. If they weren't hostile OOS, they won't return to where they were before.
