Um, if you click on a sector once, the map centers on it. You only "select" a sector by clicking on it twice. So you don't ever have to hit the arrow keys, it's a waste of time. Just click once on a sector on the edge of the screen, then repeat until you get where you want, shouldn't take more than a few quick clicks at the most.
A tip (I dont think changing text files modIfies game so this should also work for vanilla):
1) Open up your language file
2) Then, adjust the entry for whatever sectors you need to reach easily to have a "y" as the first letter.
3) There are no vanilla sectors with Y as the frist letter..
Conclusion): Therefore, hitting Y will cycle you through your priority sectors.
For example, I have edited Hub, and a few other sectors where I have major operations. They are now "y Hub" etc...This can be done on existing games..Just exit TC and reload.. (new sectors etc are in page file 300007)
............................................................................................................
EDIT: (ignore the rest of this post if you are vanilla)
Better yet: use an overwrite text file with the correct page number / entry..
loading a custom text file requires a script...so if you are vanilla, stick to editing the main language xml described above.
For non-vanilla, use a text-file with structure from below. Then load your text-file with a setup.XXXXX script, with two lines in it:
load text: id=XXXX
return=null
ok, for those who dont have want to extract .PCKs language file to find the sector id etc..use the following syntax in an xml file and stick it in your t-file directory:

I input the universe map as a graph where the vertices are the sectors and the edges are the transitions between sectors via various keystrokes. I then ran a breadth-first-search on the graph to annotate the vertices with their distances from the root node. I then deleted all of the edges where the target vertex' distance was less than or equal to the source vertex' distance. The result is a graph containing all shortest paths (and only shortest paths) from the root to all vertices. There is actually more than one graph (because the player-owned sector can have different names). I ran Graphviz on these graphs and dumped the result into PDFs which are in the linked archive below. The output isn't fancy, but (provided I input the initial graph correctly) it should be complete.

after reading this thread i thought you were a loony, then i tried a few of the "shortcuts"
replace loony for genius, reduced sector tracking time from minutes to nano seconds.
i didnt realise how much traversing the sector map to check stuff out had been pithing me off.
many thanks oh wise one...off to kingdom end
"," "K"
wahey,there already
now what are those goners up to
"," "E x3"

I've been trying to put together a C# application for this instead of the spreadsheet (actually the key combinations of the last version of the spreadsheet were imported from the alpha version of such app, not calculated by excel itself). However, I'm not very good at drawing.
We'll see what I can do, though. Meanwhile, you can use Ianrobo75's X3TC Stats and Resources Compendium V3.0. Several shorter combinations have been found since he released the last version (check one of the last posts on that thread), you can type them in from my spreadsheet.

After some inactivity time (and making use of the "better late than never" rule), I'm posting the shortcuts for the DLC Harmony of Perpetuity sector:
Suprisingly enough, no other sector shortcuts were affected by introduction of this DLC sector.
I'll upload the updated spreadsheet tomorrow.
Code: Select all
Harmony of Perpetuity 84
7 4-key solutions found
W^^^ 0
EEE^ -4
B>X^ -8
HHvv -22
NN<< -22
HH>v -23
JvvH -42
I'll upload the updated spreadsheet tomorrow.
