I think he was referring to end user experience and the possibility of a unfair advantage a user with a faster computer might have.

For the record, I play X because its single player - I wouldnt buy a version with mulitplayer because it wouldnt be X. The fanbase was built off a single player sandbox, thats always been its biggest selling point, and many of us have been playing since XBTF (1999). Adding other people into the mix goes against the entire format - it would just ruin the atmosphere :(

Unless of course, if you like spending days being killed over and over by griefers, or having the chat system spammed to hell by chinese people selling credits, or suffering lag & server outages... then go ahead :)

My two pence, from a X vet.
"There must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero, From this it follows that the population of the universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination" - Douglas Adams

:) I would love an X MMO

It would need areas with no PvP, and some with PvP (PvP sectors?) and maybe a newbie protection if not that.

Probably costs on some ships should be raised aswell, so the biggest ships aren't obtained by everyone within a week.

Im going to come across as a jerk here, im sure, but I hope to god egosoft doesn't go the multiplayer route. I have no interest in an MMO and no interest in multiplayer games, except maybe for a deathmatch style combat matchup. I think its a terrible idea and will generate an incredible amount of whining.

The beauty of X is that you can take the game, mod it, and play the same game for months at a time (or longer, easily).

Making MMO or multiplayer space games is fine, but trying to shoehorn a space simulation into a multiplayer game is a fools errand that will only result in shattered dreams and broken hearts.

I'd be much happier to see functional planetary systems, FTL travel rather than jumpgates, and a strategic empire layer. Shoehorning some space-stage sporelike gameplay and masteroforion3 like strategy layers into X hits my niche perfectly.

A long time ago I beta'd a WW2 Flying game < was full multi player > where you could have Multiple people in one plane < manning turrets and controling bombs as well as hopping into Fighters and taking full wings and doing formation flying and dogfights while trying not to get shot down by your own AA < also player controlled >

I could see X having simmilar types of gameplay... for a multi player exsperiance

Now that I think about it ... if it was still around I'd problaby still be playing it LOLROF this was atleast 15 years ago though I belive.

I'd enjoy Multi player X the only thing I'd find confusing would be figuring out who has access to what kind of ship. After all you have to earn money or steal your own in this current game ehehehe

is it really so hard to put two humans in the same sector to beat the livid snot out of each other? Really? really? I think not. it's an internet conection and home hosted server away. My computer could handle it. My computer can handle anything on the market and yawn.

Medal of honor has a great singleplayer and multieplayer game. What's cooler than beating up on other x fans in space. Shall we go to war? Shall we build up and then go to war... the sneak attacks on infrastructure, the backstabing, the broken alliences, backhanded deals, pirating your opponets ship.

Humans make every thing more interesting becasuse in a video game we will do pretty much anything to win.

A simple deathmatch anyone? last corp standing wins.

GAME OVER

I hate MMO. The thought of a game that I have to pay for month after month and get locked out of if I can't afford makes me sick. Sometimes I have trouble paying the power bill for the monster computer I built. I can host a server for a x game easy. Think minecraft and FPS in space.

I can see the bombs dropping....

Egosoft admin is probably going to complain about not having enough money again.

I figure if they thought about putting two people in the same sector so they could kill each other they have already tried it and are holding out.

I figured out a way to make every one happy. Realease multiplayer as an expantion. I'm bloodthirsty and want to kill all other x-denzians. But I'm stuck smushing the ai with nukes. And the ai does a horrible job of shooting them down. A human would offer me a greater challenge. He or she might even kill me.... It's just an internet connection and a few thousand lines of code away to put two talented pilots in the same sector.

it doesn't even need to be a complicated add on. As long as I get to blow up the other guy using the standard terran conflict interface I've come to love.

very respectfully, Mr. Reeves
The skunk really is a bare bones model. It doesn't even have a GPS to highlight the way. Or targeting software MK 2 to allow target selection and painting from the sector map. It lacks a Trading System Extention to show prices in the sector you are in. The lack of satellites in rebirth is also annoying to the trader/pirate looking for a mark.

Come on Reeves, I know you know better than to necro a 2yr old thread.

BTW your post is exactly same (or damn close to it) as the one in the X REBIRTH ONLINE thread.

What I DO NOT WANT is this game to turn into an "on line Only" game w/ pay to play.

I like being able to fire it up and enjoy it for a few hrs and save / reload if need be + i dont want / need another bill.

Edit: But being able to play 2 player would be fun for me and the wife ;)

Glaceious I agree. My deal is I have a twin and we both play the game. I want to play with my brother and I think it is time for Egosoft to innovate this. My girlfriend also play's the game and wants to play. If I could only host my own server on my home network I could make it happen. i could even let other people log in over the internet if i needed someone to loot and pilliage.

And yes I will necro a 2 year old thread. I'm on topic arn't I?

My aim for the next several years is to bring people over to thinking "hey wouldn't it be great to play in the same X-universe with (insert friend here)

Freelancer did it before and Microsoft never released sales #'s. Everyone I know bought that game. X3 is a good replacement for Freelancer but I always thought it would evolve into a game where i can play with friends or at least host my own server.

With this new edition "rebirth" they are re writing the engine so it's the best shot of it happening.

I agree. I like to have the multi player and single player game exactly alike in every way except the multi player version has other people.

What you forget is that in development of a multiplayer requires members of the team to have Netcode training and if you dont want it to be some tacky addon that some devs crack out, a specialist team working on multiplayer.

That is more salaries to pay and probably more beta testers to pay, plus the length of testing would be much larger.

Is it really worth it from their point of view?

Not really.

Maybe ever so slowly, they may bring in more members with that training and work it out, although personally unsure since i obviously don't work there, they may have already done that, probably much easier now since they started from scratch on the game, thus probably no ancient code flying around ready to eat at stability.

Mind you this thread is still 2 years old, i doubt it will live much longer.

Oh, if it were only that simple.
Fact of the matter is, designing games is a complicated and hard work. One cannot simply add or change stuff wihout impacting other things.
When you start adding features, you WILL end up having to make changes and concession to accomodate them....

Please don't resurrect old threads, especially not to belabour a point you're already making elsewhere...it starts to look awfully like spam if you do that.
