Space station or Elephant

(and no the title wasn't refering to the size of my wifes bum...lol)

I want to have/place a few docking stations of my own around the galaxy... but... would I be better off buying an Argon trading station? or use an elephant?

which has the bigger cargo holding capacity?

I know the trading station has MUCH better shields, but the ele has 4 sets of defensive turrets and can hold 14 ships !

(The only benifit of the ele is the fact that... for the price of the trading station I can buy a FULLY kitted out ele, 6 laser towers, couple of escort ships and still have enough cash left for a slap up dinner...lol )

Your thoughts please guys or any other suggestions ???

The Trading Station has a relatively small and fixed amount of what it can hold of each type of ware. But it can hold all wares, so the total space is quite large. Also, the Argon and Teladi Trading Stations can hold a seemingly unlimited number of fighters internally, and up to 5 TS/TP/M6/M7 ships externally. The Trading Station has massive shields compared to a TL, but is fixed and has no built-in weapon capabilties. So, your choice. In my estimation, if all you want is secure docking and storage, then the Trading Station is the logical choice.

Can I buy trading stations from the other races?
(never took the time to notice)

Think the Teladi one is the coolest! the Boron one looks like thunderbird 2, the Split one looks like a rusty old washing machine!

Ok the Argon one looks like the inside of a tumble dryer, but I kinda like the spinning effect...lol

Oh choices, choices !!

Only the Argon and Teladi trading stations allow unlimited fighter docking. The other three have a total ship limit of 7. You really don't want those for your purpose.

I didn't know that !

How infinate is infinate? surely there must be a limit?

And what about station defense!
I forgot to mention in the initial thread that part of my grand plan was to dot these stations around the universe then at some point start multiple attacks on various sectors.

So I guess the offended races would want to retaliate and ... i would need to defend the stations in question?

Well, I've had 60+ fighters in one before, and I've heard of others having much more than that. Maybe (I'm just speculating here) the limit is an unsigned 32-bit integer, say 2 Billion+. Close enough to 'infinite' for you? :)

Hehe! Yeah, I'd say you'd need to defend them. Governments get mighty upset when you start attacking their citizens and blowing up their stations. The good news is, if you dock fighters at your stations and make it their homebase, they'll launch automatically to defend it if the station is attacked.

Depending what you're doing, I'd go for a combination of Trading Stations and Equipment Docks. Argon and Teladi trading stations can dock many more fighters than an EQ dock can, but an EQ dock can dock big ships (TL, M1, M2) which a Trade Station can't.

How many ships can I dock at an EQ ?

sounds like this may be my answer?

Thanks

Oh and does anybody else still remember the Comodore 64 (no old git jokes please)
 you're only a kid compared to some of us here!

Comodore 64, is rather a modern thing!? I remember using the IBM 1400 series, with paper tape, punch cards and magnetic tape when I first started (second generation with transitors... 4K of storage in a box about 4 foot x 4 foot x 4 foot)!

Hi Etolf,

Have you still got your "Principles of Programming" manual for the 1401 - I've still got mine.. not a lot of good for X3 though..

Old Machines

Don't want to degenerate this into a "Who is the oldest"... but.

The first machine I worked on commercially was a Honeywell L-62. The 20MB disk drive was the size of a normal washing machine and the removable platters were about the size of the washing machine drum. The processor (64MB I think) was about the size of 2 washing machines. I think that was around 1980. Working with Cobol and RPG2 and the input was punched cards (no keyboards and monitors, only printed output! I later graduated to IBM 370 assembler!

Previous to that, I was doing some studying on an Analogue machine where you had to plug in different wires and turn dials to solve equations.

Hi Sirius 5,

Sorry, but you lose..

My first programming experience was a job interview in 1960.

My 1401 programming was in 1966, and before that it was all plugboard 'programming'.

System 360 assembler in 1976...

BRING BACK INTERNAL DOCKING!

Buy a station with internal docking. Until someone mods all stations to have internal docking, well.
