Personally I think, if there was to be a multi player option the best way would be similar to how Freelancer works. I'm not talking about the game itself but how single \ multi player works

For anyone that has not played Freelancer, you basically have 2 choices. Single player, well nothing more need be said there.

Multiplayer, connect to anyone who has a server running. This may be somone you know or a server that is hosted somewhere. If you want you can run your own server, specify how many players can play at any time and if you wnt you can assign passwords to restrict access. Can run as internet or LAN so the choice is yours. If there was these options in a future version of X I think it would be a major step in the right direction.

Or an MMO could be run like Guild Wars. The only place you see other people that are not in your party is in the towns/trading posts, or in this case Space Stations. When you go on a mission or quest and leave a town it's like a single player game.

But for X, that would eefectively kill having a fleet of ships doing your trading, or owning your own station.

I would settle for a simple ingame chat client (online).. so that I could chat with my friends ingame while playing. none of the alt/tab or windowed IM stuff.

wouldnt be too difficult.

you probably would have to design a full game for multiplayer aspects.

just me

Actually, not so long ago there was a thread about that exact thing.
Some software that you install, lets you chat right from X3, and some other games. I might have a link saved somewhere...

jup.

might be XFire.. but then again maybe not. Third party I suppose is the only way atm. Though having something specific to the game would be nicer.

Its not that its absolutely necessary.. but it would be cool to share knowlege or experience while ingame. Would also unite the community a little better.. always a plus

meh

I made a post exactly like this one a couple of months ago. The truth is, all X players have different views about it. I think it would be good, but like I'm told in Eve, there definitely should be a large police force. Mainly consisting of NPCs but if they wanted to players could participate as well. I'm sure Ego would think of somthing to make up for the lack of SETA. I'm a very slow starter myself, even though I know the X games interface and gameplay inside and out. The monthly fee should be very cheap like 2 Pounds/5 Australian Dollars/3 American Dollars/7 New Zealand Dollars. With so many players playing at once the small cost would be more than enough to make up for the cost of the server.

An Online server would make the game alot more fun. However if the player didnt' like this option, then the Single Player mode should still be available.

it is xfire. They recently fixed support for X3 ;)
on FACTS site there's a guide for it ;)

As for me,
up to 16 player by i-net or LAN would be great. If you want to make it MMO, you have to change quite alot of stuff :(

X-universe is great, but MMO would waste it. As my concept, I have thought about it. It absolutely doesn't fit here, and would waste the X-universe. Anyways, if X4 even hasn't got MP, I will buy it, but with MP, it would be fantastic.

theres one major problem with that, first that'll only work if you can get a large number of ppl.
putting it cheap and expecting to get a certain number of ppl and when it doesn't happen, you will lose alot of money.

and also, the monthly fee usually isn't for the server costs, its for the bandwidth costs, which increase for each person that players, so the more ppl playing, the more bandwidth required, and the more it costs

An MMO based in the X-Universe would have the potential to rock hard.....

It would of course have to be a completely different game - the current universe simply doesn't have enough space for an MMO and the whole economy would need a complete redesign (along with 234753287 other things that would have to change).

I know the devs have talked about this in the past and I really do hope they get it off the ground one day. Would be nice to have a second space based MMO out there to play......

Maybe WW2-Online is a good example of how X3 could expand to multiplayer...large-scale battles, together with a war-economy (or politics, in WWIIO), and with active website with all the hot news coming from the servers.

I realize I gotta register at DevNet, and have a look around there...all this talks about mp here brings nothing.

How does this sound, X9 the War

people logon and join the firght with the Kha'ak, no trading as such or station buying just pure combat vs the ever mennacing Kha'ak...

People have stats logs and recieve money for kills to better fit their ships but the basics are provided by the "united federation" . some of the things makeing it worth playing are ranks for piloting better ships and people takeing command over sectors so the person with the most experiance sets out commands for the fleet commanders, the fleet commanders command the fleet including the carrier pilots the carrier pilots control the fighters all based on rank.... and all turrets ect are controlled by players.....

cool concept ?

didnt read the post above.. till after

The only problem with that is it requires team work, have you played BF2?
The stat system never works too many people just go out to improve there own stats and forget about the team. But in a clan it would work, as i have found with BF 2 all the best games have been with my clan games.

I agree that a fully multiplayer online game would be a bad idea for most of the reasons already given, but I wouldn't mind the ability to play multiplayer with friends over a LAN, that would be cool.

sittingduck, did you ever hear about Joint Operations?
It is massive multiplayer online shooter (well, not entirely, but has up to 300 players on a server, maps of 60km2 big).

Well, there, you MUST work together, in order to win. An example:
You have a control point, they have one. You have to take theirs, but... 73 men are defending it. They hardly work together. Now, you get in position, gather a strike force around you. 20 men is already enough to take them out, if you got enough medics.

Such a thing could also be made in XOU. In order to win, you have to work together, in small combat arena's or in the huge universe.
IE, if you want to cross some pirate or xenon sectors, you need to have escorts. In the beginning, you can't afford them, so you fly with some friends or other people into the sector. You cover eachother, and win.
