[6.00 Beta 7] No startmenu UI with -skipintro option under Linux - Not reliably replicated.

Post by Byter » Wed, 29. Mar 23, 11:12

Hello.

I reported this on the discord as I didn't think it's a beta related bug, but was told to post here anyway.

The bug in one picture:
download/file.php?mode=view&id=16356

Essentially, the main menu does not load.

Upon searching for exactly what could cause this, I tried basically everything.

First, I disabled all mods (and removed them). I thought maybe the one I'm working on may be the cause.
Result: Still happens.

As my second idea I removed the configuration folder.
Result: This worked at first but upon the second boot of the game the menu was gone again.

Next, I tried going back to stable.
Result: Still happens.

Then it dawned on me that I'm using launch options.
Result: Removing

Code: Select all

-skipintro
brings back my main menu.

I can reliably trigger this by adding or removing that launch option.

Here's the most hilarious part.
I've been told to add

Code: Select all

-debug all
and I get basically no more info. This is it. This is the whole log file:

Code: Select all

Logfile started, time Wed Mar 29 10:44:43 2023
[General] 0.00 'AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (RADV GFX1100)' AMD-driver v23.0.1 (Vulkan 1.3.238) check=1
[Init ] 0.00 Entering startmenu in 6.00 (496124)

Some more system info:

Code: Select all

Kernel: Linux 6.2.8-zen1-1-zen #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed, 22 Mar 2023 22:52:38 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX
RAM: 32GB
Steam and X4 located on: Samsung SSD 990 PRO 1TB

My hunch would be that because the intro doesn't have to load, that some kind of race condition occurs. I have no clue though.

If there's any information I've missed, please let me know and I'll post it as fast as possible.

First of, I just noticed I forgot a correct name for this post. My bad. Was so busy filling this bug report I lost track of stuff :D

Secondly, Ketraar suggested I start the game without

Code: Select all

skipintro
but rename the logo_egosoft.mkv. This seems to still work, without giving me the intro :)

I tried two more things:

First, I went back to a LTS release of the kernel. I ran into shared object issues so I enabled the compatibility tool and used the Steam Linux Runtime.
Result: Same issue. So it's not the kernel.

Secondly, more by accident, I still had the file renamed (so it didn't exist), but also enabled the skip intro option.
Result: Same issue. Even without the file being present, it seems to not load the UI for some reason. I expected this to happen, but it's nice to have it tested anyway. Maybe this narrows down the path in the code that may be broken.

One more test:

I disabled all DLC. Same issue.

A new observation: It now happens even with the option not present. More and more actually. And it happens mostly when I kill the game from a previous run (because of modding and stuff).

I can't explain this, but it feels like some kind of lottery at this point.

Launched the game on my linux machine. With -skipintro the game starts flawlessly and main menu appears as normal.

Might be an issue with those mods.

I have disabled all mods.

And I can't really tell what's causing this.

I changed the intro file back to what its supposed to be and now I do get the intro every time, but even if I press escape to immediately abort it, my main menu appears reliably.

Really obscure bug :D

Maybe this isn't even related to "skipintro". Here's a Reddit post, on Windows as well, and the last comment is from 14 days ago.

I do not seem to be the only person with the issue.

Can you also still hear sounds from the menu if you try to navigate it with the keyboard while it's not visible?

Just tried it. No. I tried basically every button on the keyboard and even tried clicking with the mouse. The only thing loading is the main menu galaxy (the one in the background) and music.
