[4.20][465891] Weird clearance issue when building a station [Workaround found]

Post by lnomsim » Mon, 10. Jan 22, 15:29

Version and language (4.20 4658991 English).
Whether or not your game is modified using any third party scripts or mods (see note below) : tried on both modified and unmodified
Game start being played : PIO and station planner mode
Exact nature of the problem, where and when it occurs and what you were doing at the time : it seems the game doesn't entirely delete modules and create a clearance issue when building a station
Any possibly relevant changes you have made to your game, system, or software before the issue occurred: None, no mods were updated when it occurred on modified playthrough. An no mods were activated on vanilla playthrough. I had no system updates iehter and my computer hadn't been restarted.
Where appropriate, additional symptoms, error messages, links to screenshots and crash dump files (see this FAQ entry): none

original steam post (with images) :https://steamcommunity.com/app/392160/d ... 471762362/

I have built three stations without any issue.
I build Terran, and always begin by building a luxury dock then storages under it like a tower.

Thing is, I'm trying to build a fourth station, I can build the dock with no problem. I can build my first storage, but then I can't build anything else under it. Actually, if I remove the first storage and try to build anything under the dock, I can't.

I can't even move the dock under its current level, it's like there is something there.

I thought it was because of another station nearby that has a Large pier that might overlap that area. But that seems to not be it since moving the station further away doesn't solve the problem, and sometimes, I can actually build something under the dock before everything turns red.

If I try to build further down, it seems to work, but I have that huge area where I can't build in the middle of the plot.

Note:
I notice there is a white sphere and a line coming from it each time I try to build a module. And it's every time I try to place something under it that I can't place the module.

Yet, If I try to place modules far under it, I can build again.

I can't provide a save file since it was on a modified game.

BUT I tried on a vanilla game in the station planer mode, and I can reproduce it 100% of the time, no matter the size of the plot.

Step 1: Build Terran luxury dock
Step 2: Build something under it (I haven't tried everything, but I am sure the issue happened with the Terran round connector, the Terran vertical connector, short or long, doesn't matter, and any Terran storage.)
Step 3: either for some reason, it won't be possible to build further down, or delete/remove a module
Step 4: try to build another module, or to move the station down
Step 5: notice it's impossible to do so, but if you try to place the module further down or move the station further down, it works again. there is just that clearance issue where the module was/couldn't be built.

I insist on the fact that it doesn't happen just when deleting the module.
I tried to build a station in that order:
Dock
Round connector-storages attached on the side
Long vertical connector
Hex pier

The hex pier couldn't be built because of the storage.
So I built a small connector.
I still couldn't place the pier, even though it seemed possible, so I tried to build another small connector, but I got the clearance issue.
(you can see this on the images in the steam post)

A save clearly showing which station is involved would help a lot here.

I'm willing to send a save file.
Can I make a save in the station planer mode ?

But it doesn't affect just one station, it affects all new stations.

Please provide the actual save in which you ran into the problem, with as many details as possible on how to reproduce it. You don't need to send the save; just uploading it to a reputable file hosting site and provide a link here.

The problem is that the save is on a modified playthrough.
But I can reproduce it anytime on a new vanilla game. That's why I'm asking if I can create a new save with the station planner. (I don't know if that's possible or if this could help.)

Anyway, I made a video to show the issue (on an unmoded playthrough in station planner mode):

If your game is modified, then yes, you'll have to start a new, unmodified game. And yes, you'll have to do it with a real game, not the station planner.

I feel stupid right now.

So, I started a new game, unmodified.
Went into the station planner.

Reproduced the error.

Then, I didn't know if you wanted the save with the plot empty or with the different modules already on the plot. (and that way I could see if the problem persisted when loading the save or if the process had to be repeated entirely.)

So, in doubt, I confirmed the placement of the modules before saving.

And... When confirming module placement with only the dock, the issue seems to have disappeared entirely.

I was able to build an entire station repeating the usual process, I even removed modules, tried to place modules in positions I knew wouldn't work to see if the clearance issue would persist, and to my surprise, it did not, I can now build the station correctly without any issue.

As I was typing the message, I tried to remove every module of the station (including the dock) to leave the plot empty, and then go back in it. Seems like the issue is gone for good.

I also tried starting a new game, and it really seems like the issue is gone.

I will try loading the save where I had the issue to see if it's still there.

EDIT: Or not...

I haven't tried to load the save yet, but I managed to trigger the issue again, but this time I have no idea why or how.
But confirming modules placement definitely fixes it.

But unfortunately, I can't create a save with the issue.
