I am not expecting X4 to be effected by the weather, that would be silly.
Actually, space does have weather, namely solar winds and storms. The level of radiation could affect solar power plants productivity at least, and very high levels of radiation could pose a hasard to space travel at certain times.
With some creativity and perhaps inventing a few unrealistic but "close enough" things (after all, we have space flies... so why not moving nebulae or the like), the "terrain" in the game could be made a bit more dynamic, which in turn would make the strategic battlefield for faction wars evolve over time and force strategies to adapt and change.

Heres how it looks: The PHQ has no dock, so you cant dock to it to transfer anything to it. Likewise, nothing can dock to it, so it cant buy anything it needs to supply the materials to build a dock. So without a dock, you cant build a dock. :?
Materials for construction are stored in the map-and-targetting-invisible build storage (little V shaped module with red lights, trolley sign and containers off to the side), where ships can dock instantly after a build is set up.
*sigh*

Yet another snippet you have to hear from someone else, because the game has no proper guidance or documentation.

I cant say I've even seen this module, but I will look for it.

Thanks.

Yeah, there are a lot of really baffling decisions that went into X4. Hopefully Egosoft/modders will resolve them as time goes on.

Did you hire the Mammoth or owned it?
Hired.

Owning seems to be the best idea, but who has that cash early in the game?
I found an abandoned Heracles once, :D in my first game before the 2.0 patch. I have not seen that repeated in any game since then. It really helped get my stations going.

How do you make the damned Map stay still permanently?

It's driving me insane.

The map movement seems tied to my joystick (-- or whatever is used for flight control maybe?)

But yes, very crazy making.

I think I solved that one just now.

I turned all controller input off. Map is still now.

I finally got the PHQ built.

I was surprised to find it had a trader on board before I even docked. :D

Maybe increase joystick deadzone if it is moving when you do not want it to be moving?

Anyone have a short cut for finding a 3 star engineer for hire?

I'm not sure why anything thinks needle in a haystack hunts are fun. :gruebel:

Buy small ships until you find a suitable captain. Sell the small ships. That's the fastest way in my opinion. I also heard automining is good if you want to level your capatain up, but I never tried that.

The mission needs a 3 star engineer, not a captain.

But a captain might have a good engineer rating? Worth a thought.

However, from what I've seen so far, you need rank to get more than an apprentice. But worth checking again too.

Ah damn, I didn't read that properly. I have no idea about three star engineers. I hope your theory works.

The only sure way I know of is training one. I.e. a member of service crew in a ship that gets... mysteriously damaged all the time ;)

It is a very slow processes.

Any ship with any engineer crew gets some level of experience over time until your desired engineer. Mining, Trading, or Combat ship with high crew capacity (if you are looking for mysteriously getting damage). Have the combat ship follow/defend you. Any sector you visit there is always a hostile somewhere teleporting with your name on their wanted list.

There mere be other ways. Find a Medium miner or Large miner with high crew capacity, fill it with engineers at Wharf. Hope that one of them it decent enough (99% they are not). If not, fire em all, repair ship to get more engineers.

"IF" all fails, get More People mod and More Variety mod, get what you need. Disable mod to go back to vanilla. Or Skill up mod to train crew over time (much faster), disable mod once you got what you want. At least until devs add more training features to the game.

When the game was released you could board another ship and hire a 3 star crewmember right off it. That exploit was removed in an early update.
Currently I have many 3 star crew on various auto-miners, I usually pick from one of them when I need a captain for a new ship. Unfortunately for the pinball player, who wants to zing thru the game and do everything in the shortest time possible, it takes patience to wait for the crew to advance that way.

Good to know. Since I dont have any other ships yet, and haven't been planning on any, I guess this mission goes in the too hard basket. Which is annoying considering it pays a pittance.

I dont suppose anyone modded the 3's back in did they?

There is a mod with NPC with more skills. Well there is 2 mods. More NPC and Various NPC. Most I have seen was 3 (rarly) but plenty of 2 2/3 skill level. Alternative there is skill mod which NPC learns faster by chance. Though that kind of kills the challenge.

More NPC + Various NPC

Can we try to keep this to vanilla gameplay for this forum please. Requests, suggestions and discussion about mods belong in the S&M forum thanks.
