A plea for VR (but not necessarily right now)
So, the topic of VR, and whether its worth the investment for a company is a contentious one, but I would like to plead my case.
Yes, its understandable that a game like X4 can't put VR first, its impractical. Space sims are already a niche market, doubling up on the niche factor is just a poor idea. Its also understandable to charge for a separate VR version, its both the most practical way to recoup costs, and a clear way to plainly see how much your userbase values VR.
My father has always been a huge sci-fi nerd. I get my love of sci-fi from watching reruns of star trek and stargate with him after he got home from work. We'd watch and talk about the latest shows together, and it was how we bonded. I have since moved away, and only see my father very rarely, and rarely talk to him outside of that. Until that is..... I bought a Vive. My dad never cared for video games much, but he visited, I had him try out the Vive with Elite Dangerous, and he was entranced. Its everything he ever wanted, getting to dive full force into the sci-fi stuff he's always loved. We are building his first gaming computer (VR capable of course!) when I visit him for Christmas.
Yeah it won't be multiplayer like Elite, but it'll still be another space game we can enjoy together and talk about together. VR is what finally brought my dad into this part of my life, and I will log onto a forum, write out my sob story, and beg a bunch of devs just like this, if it means there is even the slightest extra chance for me and my dad to have one more game to bond over. No need to rush it out with the initial release, just know that even if it comes out a few years later, sometimes that VR capability means a lot more to some people than just "immersion".

From the Q&A sticky thread:
At least for now you and your Dad can always grab the X:Rebirth VR edition to tide you over
We'll just have to wait and see I guess, if they decide to do what they did with Rebirth but for X4 and release a VR 'edition' at a later date. Will X4 support Virtual Reality?
No, not at release. Virtual Reality requires major changes to the game interface, balancing as well as severe changes to ensure a proper framerate (read: performance). Thus, if there will be a VR version, it will be a standalone game.

Admiral of the Fleet.

Come back in ~3 years.
2020 - Split DLC
2021 - Terran DLC?
2022 - Boron DLC?
2023 - VR complete edition (X4 + all DLC).

For now, have you tried head tracking, like with Edtracker? I believe that one has the least impact on performance, and it already works in X4.

I think in the last stream it was said that a VR port was simply not financially feasible.

I believe that's right--we can see XRVR did not sell well, although I've read that's not because it isn't great but because the market is so small. I strongly recommend headtracking for almost everyone! A good GPU like GTX 1070 can also handle triple screens, which I actually prefer to wearing a VR headset anyways.linolafett wrote: ↑Tue, 26. Again, maybe in 3-5 years and if Half Life: Alyx will be good the VR market will boom, making X4 VR comercially viable.
I myself thought that VR is just another gimmick that will die, like 3D TV, but it looks like VR is slowly crawling into mainstream.
The price of VR set and requirement must still drop (because it's not cheap to have VR set + rig that will pump proper performance), but I honestly think it will be reality.
I'll probably buy VR when I'll be replacing my current rig in a few years.
I already have like 20 VR games marked on my Steam wishlist (like Blade and Sorcery) that I might buy sometime in the future.

Now that would be awesome. VR is amazing

Well looks like even cows wear VR headsets nowadays. Maybe they enjoy space flights and you just got a new market https://www.google.de/amp/s/www.bbc.com ... e-50571010

Sometime in the past: We are going to have flying cars by 2020!rene6740 wrote: ↑Thu, 28. Nov 19, 21:43Well looks like even cows wear VR headsets nowadays. Maybe they enjoy space flights and you just got a new market https://www.google.de/amp/s/www.bbc.com ... e-50571010
2019 actually: Virtual reality market extends for cows for better quality milk.
Re: A plea for VR (but not necessarily right now)
X4这游戏不太适合作为VR游戏吧.....个人感觉X4是一个经营模拟的游戏,用VR玩不难受吗....如果是别的游戏星际公民,就当我没说

Re: A plea for VR (but not necessarily right now)
The whole concept of a 'flying car' is silly and superfluous. We already have aircraft and helicopters ;pallrobot wrote: ↑Sun, 1. I think the concept was always that everyone would have an small aircraft in 2020 instead of a land-based vehicle, really. But I know how to fly aircraft and I know that 99% of people should not be allowed to (automation and public transport is the future).

Re: A plea for VR (but not necessarily right now)
This type of game is exactly what VR is for. I would buy the xrebirth VR version if I hadn't already played the original game so much as I almost did buy the VR version anyway but decided to hold off. The 3.0 update for X4 sounds amazing and I am waiting to buy until that update is officially out.
Re: A plea for VR (but not necessarily right now)
This is probably why they decided to not do it for X4. Obviously not you alone, but as a community, I bet many were in the same boat, played it too much to want to buy and play again.smilinglyer wrote: ↑Tue, 14. Re: A plea for VR (but not necessarily right now)
I bought a HMD and now all I want is to play X4 in VR. I have not played X4 ever since I got my headset. Play Vox Machinae instead. Miss X4, but VR has spoiled me rotten.
Re: A plea for VR (but not necessarily right now)
Have you tried head tracking without a fully enclosed HMD? I use edtracker (via Opentrack) and it needs to be implemented more in the game, but it's pretty cool when flying.
