I haven't found any rare stuff yet but I did craft the security hacker thing in the lawless place that is DeVries. On my next trip to the local ship supermarket in Far Out I totally forgot I had it and barely escaped with 10% hull after every single police ship in the zone came after me lol.
and Yeah I've had that happen just with hacker chips.

Sorry if this has been asked before.
I got the training book(s), but how do I upgrade the crew members?

I think you do it through the show skills info screen that has the skills and stars on it. For NPCs that don't have the show skills option in the radial menu you'll need to access their skills screen through the management section of the ship's or station's info dialog screen.

Someone in Beta forum reported that it only worked when they were on the skunk though.

You need to first craft a gift from inventory items, then win a normal smalltalk game. You will then get the option to give the NPC the gift unlocking a hard smalltalk game. Win that game and you'll have the skill books as a reward option.

I think gifts are part of patch 3,0, not Teladi Expansion specifically.

Are the skill books random or do they depend on the npc?

Not sure if the skill books available from the (successful) extended chat are random, but there are at least 3 books atm: Nav, Combat & Leadership. You can apply any book to the appropriate skill (if it needs upgrading) on any of your NPCs
So far all I was getting was Leadership books, but just had a Nav book drop. Presumably there will eventually be others for Engineering, Management etc..

So you can have an NPC with 5 stars in all assuming you have enough books?

Yes. You can craft the gifts by buying stuff from the merchants and then just save/reload until you get the right book you want. They also have a hire the best npc option if you win the hard small talk game. The reward npcs are usually pretty good. Engineers seem to give engineering books quite often.

The Seminar's seem to be somewhat random.
Maybe they give you seminars based on their highest skills?
Cause I've had Managers give me Leadership, Navigation, Management.
But not always all 3, sometimes just 1.

where did you find your piece tamina? and what you mean about the police scanner?
EDIT : found another piece in
Venturous profit - inside one of the destoryed water sotrage sections
Also...
Piece of the Ancient Device at 1 of the Xenon Stations in Cryptic Heart.. Need to Long Range Scan, (it's pretty tucked away)
Kha'ak Artefact at AG Core Dig in Last Stand, again, pretty tucked away in the O section of Rock.
Piece of the Ancient Device Inside the cave of the Badlands Mining Colony in Dormant Bear. Fly into it's pit in the centre, hard to find as it's dark (follow the red lights) down.
Kha'ak Artefact at Persistent Darkening, next to Reiver Station, generally the one being attacked by a Plutarch Light Sul, Long Range Scan.
Kha'ak Artefact at the Lonely Giant in Exhaustless Mines.. Inbetween the 2 main rocks

Anyone else run into the booby trapped locked boxes yet? one false move, and boom, you loose about half hull points!

Up until now I ended up finding normal lockboxes, damaged lockboxes(that strangely enough doesn't drop anything even if they are supposed to contain uncommon loot) and booby trapped ones.
For the last ones, every time I shoot one lock, it blows up and take half of my hull with him. Still haven't managed to understand how to avoid it

It's no different than the other lock boxes, except that if you even hit the box's hull even once, it explodes, so you have to make sure you only hit the locks.
